week bout with virut pneumonia.
He entered the hospital June 24.
He had been stricken while touring
northern Michigan in his campaign
for the Democratic senatorial
nomination this fall.

Two Measures
Aimed At Spying
WASHINGTON UK The Senate
Judiciary Committee has approved
two measures aimed at tightening
espionage and sabotage laws and
the House has passed another de
signed to harass American Com
munists. The Senate group Monday ap
proved House - passed legislation
that would:
1. Make peacetime spying pun
ishable by death.
2. Require all persons trained by
foreign powers in espionage or
sabotage to register with the at
torney general. This would Include
foreign diplomat.
It also approved a bill that would
authorize the President to bar any
potential subversive from defense
plants in wartime or if war were
threatened. A similar bill was
pigeonholed by the House Judici
ary Committee last week.

E. T. Schosso at Clark Air Force
Base, Manilla, Philippine Islands.
Maternal grandparents are Mr.
and Mrs. W. A. Bobbins of Oak

Cuyla, have moved there to make
their home. Saum is scoutmaster

Mr. and Mrs. Walter Smith are
employed by the DFPA and with
their daughter, Karen, are spend
ing the summer at Quines Creek.
Ralph Maisenbach is employed
by the DFPA and is located in
South Douglas, between Myrtle
Creek and CanyonviUe.
Pvt. William Simmons is spend
ing a 10-day furlough visiting his
grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. 0. C.

Malin brought Mrs. Street's fa
ther, Charles Seigle, back to his
home in Tenmile, and are spend

Contempt Counts
For 17 Persons

Un-American Activities Committee
Tuesday named 17 persons it wants
cited for contempt ol congress tor
refusing to answer questions con
cerning alleged Communist ties.
Chairman Velde (R-Ill) said the
committee decided unanimously to
recommend to the House Thursday
that it vote the citations. They
would be based on testimony at
hearings here, on the West Coast
and in Michigan.
Recommended for contempt on
the basis of testimony at the West
Coast hearings were Carl Harvey
Jackins and George Tony Starko
vitch, who appeared before a sub
committee in Seattle; Thomas F.
Moore, John Rogers, Mackenzie,
Donald M. Wollam and Hebert
Simpson, who testified in Portland,
Ore., and Richard E. Adams, a
witness at San Diego.
Velde said -the. 17 either failed
to invoke the Fifth Amendment in
refusing to answer questions or did
it improperly.

gle drove to Lakeside on Tuesday
and spent the night with Mrs.
Street's aunt, Mrs. Winnie Mene
gat. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Coats drove
to Bandon Sunday. On the way
home they stopped in Myrtle Point
to visit Coats' cousins, Mr. and
Mrs. Ernie Evernden.

joyment of the trip.

at J. C. Penney Co. in Roseburg.

returned to his home in Tenmile
on Sunday.
