Actors,' Writers Lose '
Huge Suit For Damages
LOS ANGELES Twenty,
three film actors and writers have
lost their (51,750,000 damage suit
against major studios which da
nied them employment (or refusing
to say whether they had Commu
nist affiliations.
Superior Judge Ellsworth Meyer
threw the suit out of court Monday
and ordered judgment in favor of
the studios and other defendants,
including members of the House
Committee on Un-American Activ
ities.
The 23 charged that they had
been penalized for exercising their
right under the Fifth Amendment.
They argued they had been black
listed by studios after being sub
poenaed by the House Committee

Drown In Columbia :

Orr, 2S, an employe of the Umatilla :
Ordnance Depot, drowned in the
Columbia River near here Sunday
night. The body was not recovered,
and search continued Monday.
Orr, tiis wife, Lorraine, and Dr.
and Mrs. Kenneth A. Eliiott had ,
picnicked near the shore. About 11 1
p.m.. Orr decided to go swimmine.
Soon after, the party heard his
cries for help, and they rushed to .
the water with a lantern. i
The picnickers said ttiey saw Orr
once in the darkness and that he
continued to shout for about 15
minutes. Orr's wife said he was a
fairly good swimmer, and believed
he had been stricken by cramps, i
Stie was being treated for shock :
in the Umatilla hospital Monday.
