reached record proportions, fort
ing the government to resort u
rigid production controls ill an ef
fort to keep supplies from getting
out of hand Likewise, growers
have been producing more potatoes
and some other food crops than
are being used.
But in the total agricultural pic
ture, groufl bein md.e to bring
crop production into line with de
mands may be lost in a pileup of
excessive supplies o! dairy prod
ucts, meats, poultry and eggs.
Despite recent Agriculture De
partment action lowering dairy
price supports from 90 to 75 per
cent ot parity, department experts
are predicting milk output this
year will exceed last year's record.
Parity is a legal standard for
measuring farm prices declared by
law to be fair to farmers in rela
tion to prices they pay.
Milk production last year was
122 billion pounds. The government
bought the equivalent of 12 billion
pounds of milk in the form of but
ter, cheese and dried milk be
cause there was no other market
for it at the support prices.
