jews Plan Rebuilding
On Reparations Money
NEW YORK Wl The Confer
ence on Jewish Material Claims
against Germany has voted to
spend $900,000 on a program to
rebuild and advance Jewish cul
ture. The money is part of nine mil
lion dollars allocated to Jews out
side Israel from a 90-million-dol-
lar reparations installment paid
recently by Germany to Israel.
This was the first installment on
822 million dollars West Germany
has agreed to pay under a Bonn-
Israel reparations agreement,

Japan, will talk and show pic
tures of her work in Japan. The

Members of the Yoncalla Church
of Christ are working hard to
have 150 in attendance next Sun
day. Tne Yoncalla Church and the
Drain Church of Christ have en
tered into a contest in Sunday
School attendance. So far the
Drain Church has won two differ
ent Sundays

Roseburg Garden
Club Dates Show
The first of several annual gar
den shows will get underway when
the Roseburg Garden Club spon
sors "The Magic of Spring" at
the Roseburg Woman's Club April
z ana a.
The theme of the show will be
built around camellias, and will
contain five divisions. Three di
visions, horticultural specimens
arrangements and the junior di
vision, will be open to public en
try. The other two, shadow box
arrangements, and wedding and
bridal table settings are special
divisions under the supervision of
the club. Awards wll be made to
prize-winning public entries.
Hours for the show have been
set from 2 to 9:30 p.m. on Frday
and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sat
urday. .Entres may be made at
the clubhouse from 9 to 11:30 a..m

Demonstrate
4H Workings

Members of the Deer Slayers
4H Club gave demon trations at
their last meeting at the Deer
Creek School Monday. Charles
Starnes and Jerry Rust demon
strated how to weave string and
make different items. Nancy Ow
ens and Doris Stringfellow showed
how to feed a bummer lamb, and
Albert Radclife and Wally Foster
demonstrated the art of killing a
chicken.
The club is planning a field trip
for April 3, according to Albert
Radcliffe, club reporter. Janet
Evanoff resigned from the club
and Charles Starnes was elected
the new secretary-treasurer.
Another candy sale waa discuss
ed for the near future. Clifford
Stone was elected chairman of
this committee.
Supper Makes Profit
The box supper held at the South
Deer Creek Grange hall last Sat

man. Three of the 4H Club mem

a piano solo, Jane Gates gave a
short talk on 4H club work, Lester

ing a sheopherder, Curti Barker
played the steel guitar and the
harmonica. Helen Anderson won
the "Cake Walk," which brought
$9. Community singing waa partic
ipated in by all.
Boys Ski
Mr. and Mrs. Albert Radcliffe
and boys drove up to Taft Moun
tain Sunday and Mike and Albert
did some skiing on the warm sun
ny slopes. The snow was perfect
for good skiing.

old Jefferies of Roseburg were vis
itors of the Waldon Halfields last
Sunday.
Sunday evening services at the
Pine Grove Church were well at
tended. Joanie Kruse had charge
of the program. A duet was sung
by Roxie and Linda Hanneman,
also a duct was offered by Betty
Brydges and Judy Ott, A trio,
including Joanie Kruse, Betty
Brydges and Donny Meyers, sang
a number. The Rev. Mr. Currier
delivered the evening message.

Gordon Rosclund and Mrs. George
Krueger visited in the Willard
Smith home Sunday afternoon on
the Buckhorn Road.
Major Accused
Of Pocketing,
Discarded Money
TOKYO An Air Force Major
entrusted with destroying wornout
military currency and a former of
ficer have been arrested for al
legedly pocketing some $200,000
destined for the furnace, the Air
Force announced.
Maj. Thomas Pate of Los An
geles, under bouse arrest here, has
helped recover most of the money,
Far East Air Forces said. No
charges have been filed against
him.
The FBI in Washington identi
fied the second man as Lowell A.
Logan, 24. of Springfield, Ohio,
now a student at the university
of Iowa, Logan was arrested Sat
urday at Iowa City. He pleaded
innocent yesterday of a charge of
embezzling $20,000 in federal funds.
Pate has been finance officer at
Tachikawa air base 20 miles south
west of Tokyo.
The air force said he admitted
swapping script of small denomi
nation for bigger currency and
then falsifying records to show
that the bigger certificates had
been destroyed.
The role allegedly played by Lo
gan was not announced.
When arrested, the major was
carrying $06,000 in U. S. currency.
Military personnel in Japan are re
quired to use only military script
while on duty in Japan.
The metric system of measure
