She's in her early 20s. She wears
a white sweater and a green
corduroy skirt. And police of two
cities are looking for her.
Here's why:
She walked into two Kalamazoo
stores and one in Grand Rapids.
She boldly posed as a new employe
among many hired for the Christ

ahead. 1
In Grand Raoids she walked no

Canadian Radar
Screen Device
Tests Completed
OTTAWA Wi Canada's defense
research board said Friday that
the "MicGill Fence," a Canadian
designed early-warning radar de
vice to detect enemy planes strik
ing across the Canadian north, bas
been tested successfully.
The board's annual review said
the hush-'hush barrier, which even
tually will suplement joint Canadian-American
radar chains in the
Par North, was the outstanding
accomplishment of the board in
1333. Its details are secret.
"Summer trials confirmed the
value of the device as a warning
system that can be installed eco
nomically in terms of money, ma
terials and manpower, and all com
ponent parts can be manufactured
in Canada," the review said. "De
velopment work and further trials
are proceeding."
The project was developed by
the board with the assistance of
the Eaton Electronics Research
Laboratory of McGill University,
in Montreal, and the National Re
search Council. Experimental
equipment was manufactured by
the RCA Victor Co. of Montreal
.which also supplied installations to
tests. , ;

To Be Stepped Up To Meet
Changes In 1954 Markets
By SAM DAWSON
NEW YORK (fl To make 1954
t prosperous year, some leading
comapny officials .re saying to
day, try for a neat balance be
tween two courses:
1. Take a stitch-in-tirae now.
2. Step up competition with your
rivals and grab a bigger share of
whatever market 1954 offers.
The stitch-in-time is the explana
tion a number are giving for the
layoffs, production cuts and inven
tory whittling that bas been spread
ing through a number of industries
of late. Executives of auto, appli
ance and steel companies argue
that by cutting back output now
they are avoiding the sort of boom
that could bring on a bust.
Some labor leaders have another
name for it. Layoffs in the auto
industry, for example, have
brought union charges that far
from being a forward-looking step,
output slashes now are the result
of past mistakes or "reckless
and irresponsible overschedul
ing" In the first half of 1953.
In the auto and appliance indus
tries, where layoffs have already
whittled down inventories, the em
phasis is being laid on plans to
push 1954 saies of new products or
models, just as it will be in the
auto industry.
The bigger and more diversified
the company, apparently, the eas
ier the task will be to adjust to
the 1954 market.
Examples of this can be found
in the auto Industry where the dog
fight between the big three is
alarming the smaer producers,
and a so in the 1954 programs of
companies.
General Electric executives think
that in the 1954 competitive mar
ket the company that has a na
tional reputation can count on a
bigger share of the consumer's dol
lar. But they aren't taking any
chances. They're going to make
sure by stepping up their adver
tising and promotion programs by
around 20 per cent next year.

west Pipeline Corp., one of three
other firms which have applied to
the Power Commission for permis
sion to deliver natural gas into
Washington and Oregon.
