Club is holding a turkey, ham and
bacon shoot Sunday at Tiller. ,
The new location is just past
Tiller, up the hill, back of the
old millsite. Signs will be posted
to direct those who wish to at
tend. Part of the proceeds will ta
to PTA to help furnish Chrislmas
candy to all the youngsters at Uie
school Chrislmas party.

Sues Singer For Divorce

Mitchell has been sued for divorce
by Jacqueline Loughery, the "Miss
U. S. A." of 1952, who complained
ihu he told her other women were
better lovers.
Miss Loughery's suit asserted
Mitchell boasted of affairs with
other women and even had more
affection for his horse Scotch, than
he did for her.
The beauty also complained that
Mitchell drank to excess and had
"severely beaten her upon occas
ion."
' Miss Loughery asked for all of
ineir community properly, which
she values at $100,000, alimony ol
$2,500 a month and legal costs.

man just seems to outsmart him
self. The atom bomb is the current
example of how he can think up
things to solve one problem only
to find a host of new ones in the
wake.
And there are other instances.
Take, insects. A few years back,
man dreamed up DDT and crowed
about having insects licked. They
died like flies. All, that is (as he
found out later)) but the biggest
and hardiest. They didn't die. In
stead, they had millions of off
spring and these, loo, were the
biggest and the hardiest.
New and super races of insects
could be coming. Sure, man is find
ing new insecticides that will clob
ber these, too. Or will they? Maybe
only the biggest and hardiest of the
suoer will be left as breeders.
Some worriers fear that some
thing similar could be going on in
side you. '
Wonder drugs have been the
blessing of this century. They ap
pear to have routed some of man's
worst enemies, such as pneumo
nia. But a few doctors fear that the
wonder drugs are being relied
upon too much that perhaps they
are being used so often for the
minor ills of man that he may be
building up immunity to them.
When the real killer strikes, the
wonder drug might no longer bave
its old whammy.
Or look at the auto. A blessing,
most allow.' Certainly necessity
for many a family. The auto re
tired the horse. People got from
here to there at ever faster speeds.
Miles no longer were obstacles.
Now the autos seem to be breed
ing like flies, too. Streets and high
ways are so clogged with them,
that for minutes at i time no one
goes anywhere. Often it takes long
er to get across today's city in a
car than it did in the one-hoss
shay.
The car spawned Hie iuper
highway, one of man's great
prides. But no matter how hard the
taxpayer seems to strain he can't
keep up with Detroit. That city can
breed cars faster than the taxpay
er can build roads for them.
The taxpayers votes more and
more school bond Issues. But the
schools just don't seem to rise as
fast as the kids grow.
Pension funds swell, too, and
sooial security taxes are going up

next year. But the pensions and:
the retirement incomes that looked
so rosy when you planned them.i
somehow look pretty inadequate!

American boast but it's mostly it
the ends, among the young and the
elderly. Those in the middle, pro
ductive years find it harder to care
for their children, to prepare for
retirement.
One of man's greatest steps for
ward was to think up all the won
derful gadgets that take drudgery
out of housework. Everyone wants
them. In fact, everyone insists
upon having them.
Providing them makes the new
house so expensive that, to keep
the price down to something an
average husband can afford, build
ers make rooms smaller and small
er. 1
People feel cramped. And they
have more leisure to notice they're
cramped.
The house can't get any smaller
if you want to get all the gadgets
in. Without them, builders say, you
won't buy. Make the house bigger,
thev say, and vou can't buy.
All this would be pretty sad, ex
ceot for one thing.
Everyone gripes about it; But no
one almost no one would actual
ly be willing to go back to the way
things were 50 years ago.
Teachers End Strike;
Schools Are Reopened
GARFIELD, N. J. W Nine
schools reopened as AFL teachers
ended a strike for higher salaries
and returned to their classrooms.
The faculty group, told that their
pay demands would be met, voted
Tuesday night to end the state's
first formal strike of teachers.
The walkout, which began last
Friday after the City Council re
fused to approve an appropriation
to cover a salary boost, gave some
3,600 schoolkids an unexpected
three-day holiday.
Salaries prior to the strike
ranged between $2,600 and $4,600 a
year. The teachers demanded in
crease of $150 to $400 annually.
