Stubborn Steer Drowns Cowboy In Deschutes
BEND HI A stubborn steer
drowned a cowboy on the Oliver
Jones Ranch about 50 miles south
of Bend Sunday.
The cowboy, Vernon Francis
Hart, 28, a Korean War veteran
who has been working on the Jones
ranch recently, roped the steer on
the banK of me Deschutes Hiver.
The steer refused to be pulled :
over, and plunged down the bank I
into me river, towing norse ana

Jones, who was watching from :
the oposite bank, aiid Hart went;
under and failed to come up. Jones
jumped in, but could not reach
Hart in time to rescue him. The I
