Mrs. Gerlinger has many friendB
in Roseburg, having visited here
a number of times. She has
been one of the outsanding wom
en workers for the Republican
Women of Oregon and from 1940
to 1948 served as national commit
tee woman.
She only recently attended the
presentation of the monuments of
Jason Lee and John McLough
lin, Oregon pioneers, on the na
ional capiol grounds in Washing
ton D. C. While there, she states
she enjoyed a visit with Charles
A. Brand, former Roseburg resi
den, who is there visiting his
daughter.
In 1951, Mrs. Gerlingcr spent
three months touring Europe and

Kirkwoods have two sons and two
daughters.
On this trip Mrs. Gerlinger was
accompanied hy Mrs. E. J. Swin
dells and Mrs. Wilson Johnston,
both of Portland. The three will
visit in California and Mrs. Ger
lingcr will attend the Charter Day
celebration at University of Cal
fornia as the guest of President
and Mrs. Robert Gordon Sproul.
She was graduated from U. of C,
according to her, "a good many
years ago."
She will visit the Kirkwoods and
Stevens before returning to Port
land. When she arrives in London
for the coronation, she will join
her good friend, Mrs. Donald Spen
cer, of Portland, who has already
arrived in England. She will make
the trip on the ship, ueen Eliza

above, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. A. Rumsey, 1630 Ce
dar St., Roseburg, is now a corporal in the WACs. She was
graduated from Roseburg High School in 1951. After en
listing in the WACs, Miss Rumsey was sent to Camp Lee,
Va., for her basic training, after which she went to Fort
Sam Houston, Tex., for her training as a dental technician
She is now stationed at Camp Kilmer, N.J.

burg Jay-C-Ettes appropriately st
tired in every type of ragged hobo
costume arrived at the home of
Mrs.- Charles Wright Wednesday
evening to take part in a hilarious
hobo party. Any resemblance to
hobos or bums, living or. dead, was
entirely coincidental, but the wom
en naa i good time judging the cos
tumes and Play-acting "Bums"
of all types before the business
meeting oegan.
Mrs. Walt Brit;el, president con
ducted the short business meet
at which time nlans were discussed
for a potluck dinner for Jay-C-
Ette and their husbands to be
held sometime in April. It was an
nounced that the annual J.C. spon
sored basketball banquet would be

tel, and the Jay-C-Ettes were urged
to attend. A discussion was held
on the idea of having an annual
jay-c-fctte acnievement award to
be presented to the outstanding
Jay-C-Ette at the yearly J. C.
First Citizen banquot and a com
mittee to formul-ila the list of Qual
ifications for such award was ap
po.nted. Members serving on this
comittee are: Mrs. Bruce Ham
ilton, Mrs. Glen Scott. Mrs. Bill
Shapro and Mrs. Jay Golden.
Mrs. urittel thanked the group
for their cooperation in assisting
with the calling for blood donors in
the recent Rod Cross Bkrodmo
bile drive. The secretary read a
letter from Gene Malecki,- state
representative of the national foun
dation for infantile paralysis,

of Foreign Wars are sponsoring
a benefit dance to be held Saturday
evening, March 21, at the Grange
Hall lor Raleigh Johns, Azalea
telephone operator, who has been
a victim of crippling arthritis for
years, and has just returned
from Portland where he underwent
a cataract operation on one eye.
Dale Johns of Azalea, drove to
Portland and brought Raleigh
Johns back from the hospital Sun
day. He is reported much improv

by the group in the "Mothers
March against rolio."
Following the business meeting
the hostesses, Mrs. Charles
Wright, Mrs. Wally Cole, Mrs.
Bruce Hamilton, Mrs. BUI Miles,
and Mrs. Walt Baglien, served re
freshen ts "hobo" style. Sand
wiches and cookies wrapped in red
paper napkin attached to "carry
ing" sticks and steaming mugs of
hot coffee were passed around, and
refills were plentiful.
Later on in the evening the group
enjoyed several games and con
tests conducted by Mrs. George
Shepard. Mrs. Harold White was
awarded the prize for the best
costume.

Mrs. Mable Backlund was hon
ored Wednesday afternoon by the
Elgarose Comfort Club, when it
met for a Dotluck luncheon at the
home of Mrs. Emilie Hargesheimer.
A lovely birthday cake and many
gilts were presented to ner.
The business session was held
after the luncheon. An April Fool's
pinochle party was planned by the
members for Saturday, April 4, at
g p.m. at the Elgarose School. Mrs.
Jean Pankey won the door prize.
A baked food sale was held at the
end of the business meeting.
Mrs. Carol Newman and sons,
Walter and Mickey, were visitors.
