the first game of the season lor
Dick Yurk's Bulldogs.
For its second trip out of town
this year, the Roseburg squad will
draw the favorite's role. The Bull
dogs have as many returning let
termen as the Indians, but are
ahort on trials of competition. The
Indians go into this one with two
games under their belts.
The size factor is about the same
between the two teams. Roseburg
has a starting lineup .which in
cludes three six footers. Sutherlin

50 Shooters Out In Rain
In spite of the driving rain Sun
day, approximately SO shooters
turned out for the regular Rod and
Gun Club practice session at the
Winchester Traps.
Much of the shooting was done
from the porch of the club house,
but at least two scores failed to
suffer. In the 16-yard event,
Charles Klinger and Dean Bubar
scored perfect 25 s. Knoi Handy
was close behind with 24 and Mar
ion Emmett had 23.
No doubles were fired. Lee Mil
ler led the list of handicap scor
ers with a 23x25. Both Lloyd Fu

Extended To Vets
Of Korean War
An important new provision in
the Social Security Act will be of
interest to veterans of the Korean
campaign, and their families Rec
ognizing that time spent in service
would jeopardize the veterans'
future social security rights, Con
gress amended the law two years
ago to give social security wage
credits of $160 a month to men
and women who served in the arm
ed forces during the World War II
period.
Then came the Korean crisis,
and again thousands of civilians
went into uniform.
The new amendments to the So
cial Security Act, passed this
summer, extended the S160-a-tnonth
waged credits to those in
service anytime between July 1947
and the end of 1953. This will
mean that time spent In service
will help those veterans to acnuire
eligibility for retirement or death
benefits..
More importantly, it means lhat
benefits may be payable right now
to the widows and children of some
postwar servicemen who died in
action or after being discharged.
Even though the veteran had nev
er worked in a social icruritv job.
his time in service during World
War II, or later, may qualify his
survivors for social security bene
fits. Where monlhly benefits are al
ready being paid, in some cases
the amounts can be Increased by

by medical experts. One of the
first such examinations, by two
Duke University psychologists in
198, resulted in a conclusion that
Lady is a "genuine phenomenon.'

Dies Sunday Afternoon
Joe Dalton Van Horn, 66, died
Sunday afternoon, Dec. 7, after an
illness of three months at his home
on Fairmont Ave. He was born
June 25, 1886 in Calhoun, Miss.,
and came to Roseburg ten years
ago to make his home.
He was a member of the Church
of Christ of Roseburg and of the
B.P.O. Elks No. 326, Roseburg.
Surviving are his wife, Velma,
Roseburg; two sons: E. E. Van
Horn and Lloyd Van Horn, both
of Roseburg. a daughter, Mrs.
Mrs. Melvin (Octal Jones, Grants
Pass; two brothers: 'J. D. Van
Horn, Eugene; O. P. Van Horn,
Roseburg; two sisters: Mrs.
George Schooling, Shreveport, La.;
Mrs. Esco Johnson, Eugene; and
seven grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held in
