Ohio Youth New
Star Farmer v '
Of United States
KANSAS CITY W Walter Wav-
no Vogel, a 21-year-old youth from
Republic, Ohio, who started farm
ing seven years ago with one acre
and built up an operation worth
$16,000, is the new Star Farmer
of America. ,
The honor carrying a $1,000
cash award went to the Ohioan
at Tuesday night's session of tha
Future Farmers of America con
vention here. It is the highest hon
or the FFA awards. - ,
Three regional Star Farmers
also were named, and in a cere
mony before some 6,000 farm '
youths, received $500 checks each.
They were John W. Reynolds Jr.
20, Goodlettsville, Tenn., star farm
er of the south; George H. Warm
ington, 20, McMinnville. Ore . star
farmer of the Pacific region, and
Frank L. Arnold Jr., 21, of Mid
dlesex, N. Y., star farmer of the
North Atlantic region.
The three and Vogel also were
among 319 FFA members who ear
lier received the organization's
highest degree, that of American
farmer.
L" "as M. High of Ohio City,' 0.,
vice president for the central re
gion, made the presentation of the
Star Farmer award to Vogel, not
ing that "you have overcome tre
mendous difficulties to become a
successful farmer and a good lead
er." Vogel's parents were separated
before he entered high school.
Living on a one-acre farm with
his mother near McCutchenville,
Ohio, the boy got his start by rent
ing small plots and hiring ma
chinery to cultivate bis land.
He made $700 his first year with
85 ducks, 400 ducklings, 370 chicks
and six acres of corn as well as
one-fourth acre potatoes. '
In his four bih school years, he
earned nearly $3,000 from farming
and more than $1,200 from outside
jobs.-.
In 1950, he rented a badly run
down farm from a man in Tiffin,
O., and so pleased the owner by
his improvements that he began
working with the boy to better the
farm.
Now, Vogel, who is married, has
farm equipment, livestock, and
other- assets estimated at $16,000.

Democrats See
Oregon Victpry
In Morse s Bolt
PORTLAND (fl Democrats
were elated by the decision of Sen. ,
Wayne Morse, Oregon Republican,
to vote ior Gov. Adlai Stevenson
for President', but Republicans de- '
plored the action.
E. C. Sammons, president of the
United States National Bank and
treasurer of Morse's 1950 cam
paign commented: ,
mere was once a man namea
Judas Iscariot, and I don't recall
that history ever said he was i
great guy."
But Democratic State Chairman
Howard Morgan likened 'Morse to
George Norris, Gifford Pincnot ana
Fiorella LaGuardia, described as
an "illustrious group of Republi
cans who have courage and integ
rity enough to place the safety of
their nation above obedience to
their party."
Monroe Sweetland, Democratic
national committeeman, predicted
the Morse decision would swing '.he
state to Stevenson.
Jesse Card, Republican National'
committeeman, said Morse had
made "the worst mistake of his
career."
Morse, announcing Saturday he
would vote for the Democratie
candidate, said Gen. Eisenhower,
the GOP standard bearer, nas

Very Light Seed Crop
PORTLAND Wl Douglas fir
trees of the Pacific Northwest pro
auccd a very light seed crop this
year and scientists don't know why,
W. D. Hagcnstcin, chief forester
of the Industrial Forestry Associa
tion reported Friday.
Unscasonal weather during pol
llnization and lack of available
supply of stored food in the treo
are two of the reasons which have
been advanced for the complete
lack of seed cones on the trees
in some areas of Western Oregon
and Washington, he said.
There has seldom been as severe
a crop failure as this year, the
forester said. Every five to seven
years the seed yield is heavy.
The seed shortage does not mean
that the industry will not be able,
to plant trees this year, though.
Seeds are collected during heavy
yield years and stored for use
later.
It is the birds and squirrels who
will Buffer, Hagenstein said. They
depend on the seeds for food.
