lated this district for its fine work
in community service. He stress
ed how this community service
program is winning state-wide ac
claim for this district, tie also ap
plauded the fine support the unit
receives from the local newspap
er snd radio stations.
District Commander Burns was
congratulated by the department
commander for his efforts in bring
ing to this county a commander's
council, which, when organized.
will strive to get a county serv
ice officer. This, he said, is sorely
needed in this county to help the
veterans and their dependents.
John (1. Walker, department di
rector O- Americansim, spoke on
the dangers of communism and
its dangerous method of infiltrat
ing intrf our nation. He said:
'Communism lakes on many
guises and we must watch closely
for them and beat them down be
fore they get strong enough to ob
tain a strong foothold."
Hospital representative Paul Er-
no of Roseburg, spoke briefly on
the activities of the VFW in the
Veterans Hospital in Roseburg. He
urges everyone to attend the dis
trict visitation to the hospital Nov.

University of North Carolina, which
cancelled two football games be
cause of a polio outbreak here,
returns to action Saturday against
Wake Forest in a renewal of one
of Dixie's oldest gridiron series.
For more than two weeks, all
intramural athletics at the univer
sity were halted as a safeguard
against the spread of polio. Games
with Georgia and North Carolina
State were cancelled.
The polio situation showed im
provement and university officials
lifted the quarantine Monday.
