AT WOMEN'S CLUBHOUSI :
The Roseburg Toastmistress
Club met Wednesday at 7 p.m.
at the Woman's Clubhouse on
Mosher Street. The meeting was
called to order by Editha Bitchie.
The table topic mistress for the
evening was Louise Hayes. Guest
speaker, Mrs. Elizabeth. Gilchrist
told of the need for a county li
brary in Douglas County, and also
elucidated on the library bill to
be voted upon in November.
Toastmistress for the evening,
Erika Graham, introduced Char
lotte Demytt, who gave the first
prepared speech. The topic "Help
ing Hands" described the need
for nurses aids, and explained the
volunteer program.
The gold cup award was present
ed to Valyn Malstead for her
speech "Physicians and Medicine,
Yesterday and Today.'' Critics for
the two speeches were Velma
Worth and Frences Stein. Time
keeper was Billie Walker; evalu
ator. Bertha Austin; cateress, El
sa Hunter.
Several guests were present in
honor of Guest Night.
WOMEN'S CLUB GARDEN
DEPARTMENT TO MEET
The Garden Department of the
Woman's Club will meet Tuesday,
Oct. 14, for a 1:30 o'clock dessert
luncheon at the clubhouse. Mrs.
J. M. Boyles will present the pro
gram topic, "In My Garden," Mrs.
G. V. Wimberly will give a poem,
Mrs. Harry F. Hatfield will talk
on bulb gardens and Mrs. B. C.
Elliott will discuss forcing bulbs.

BRIDGE CLUB TO MEET
Roseburg's "Duplicate Contract
Bridge Club" planned play for the
season at a meeting held last
Tuesday evening, Oct. 7th. The
Bridge Club, sponsored by the
Elks Club will play in facilities
provided at the Elks Club.
During the first official meet
ing, the club elected as president,
Mrs. E. L. Tauscher; vice-president,
Morris Bowker; treasurer,
W. C. Callison, and secretary,
Mrs. R. A. Voeller. The directors
for play selected were R. Elwood
Smith and Ralph Voeller. The
standard constitution, by-laws and
rules of the "American Contract
Bridge League" were adopted to.
establish membership in the na
tional organization. Meetings are
scheduled for every other Tuesday
night beginning Oct. 21. Play for
the first period will end the first
meeting night iu January. Assem
bly of members was decided at
7:45 p.m. and play will start
promptly at 8 p.m.
Nominal membership and play
ing fees, needed to pay for equip
ment, expense and prize costs
were determined at the meeting.
All bridge players are invited to
take part, and every member of
the Elks Club may bring two cou
ples to meetings.
The first meeting will be Tues
day, Oct. 21, at 8 p.m. After the
business meeting was concluded,
a few hands ol duplicate bridge
resulted in W. C. Callison and
Fred Stever taking first place as
east and west players, and Mr.
and Mrs. R. Elwood Smith as
north and south players.

luncheon at noon.

TURKEY DINNER BEING
PLANNED BY GREEN PTA
Plans are going ahead at a rapid
rate for the turkey dinner, spon
sored by the Green PTA. It will
be given Thursday evening, Oct.
16, at the Green School gymnasium
Serving will start at 5:30 p.m.,
with two later servings beginning
at 6:15 and 7 p.m. This will be a
family affair with a special child's
plate at a lower price.
A limited number will be serv
ed. Patrons are urged to get their
tickets early. Tickets will be on
sale at Pearl's Grocery at Kelly's
Korner, the Key Shop in the rear
of J. C. Sporting Goods, and at
the Green School.

A good crowd attended the
Booster night program put on by
the Melrose Grange Tuesday eve
ning. There was a large group of
visitors from Riversdale Grange
and two from Walterville Grange.
Lovely refreshments were served
by the Home Economics commit
tee. The program was arranged
by the lecturer Connie Showers
and consisted of the seating drill
by officers, introduction of the
charter members, purposes of .
Grange, a message by recording
of the National Grange lecturer,
tap dance by Brenda Topping, vo
cal solos by Carol Manning, ac
companied by Claudette Manning
and an instrumental duet by Dale
Herrman and Rill Williamson.
