Indicted For Tax
Income Evasion

P. Bardin, former Indiana brewer
whose name haj brought into con
gressional complaints of govern
ment tax irregularities, was in
dicted Friday on charges of try
ing to evade his 1946 income taxes.
The two-count indictment, at In
dianapolis, was announced by At
torney General McGranery.
Bardin's name figured promi
nently in charges by Senator Wil
liams (R-Del.) in Williams' recita
tion of alleged irregularities in the
Internal Revenue Bureau.
McGranery's announcement de
scribed Bardin as former mana
ger of the Indianapolis Brewing
Company.
The two counts charged that Bar
din reported an income of $528,
824 and a tax thereon of $246,382
for 1946, but should have reported
$759,827 and paid a tax of $639,
841. Williams told the Seriate Febru
ary 14 that Bardin settled a big
tax claim for a small amount after

Dentist Believes Decay
Of Teeth May Be Ended

dentist believes that within 30
years a whole generation of young
people may be relatively free of
dental decay because of the wide
spread fluoridation of community
water supplies.

told delegates to the American
Dental Association convention

can Legion's Medical Advisory
Board says cuts by Congress in
funds for medical care of veterans
have hurt the quality of service
given by the Veterans Adminis
tration. Dr. Leonard G. Rountree of
Miami, Fla., the board's chairman,
told a news conference yesterday
that Veterans Administrator Carl
R. Gray Jr- disagrees with that
view. He said Gray contends re
ductions in service to veterans
have been in quantity only, not in
quality.
Rountree said the board believes
unanimously that one effect of the
31-million-dollar rut voted by Con
gress in the V. A.'s medical bud
get requests has been to bring a
sense of insecurity to the agency's
medical personnel.
Maryland Theaters May
Show Film The Miracle'
BALTIMORE W It's all right
for theaters in Maryland to show
the Italian film "The Miracle."
The State Board of Censors re
luctantly cleared the film on the
basis of a recent Supreme Court
decision which held sacrilege was
no basis for state censorship of
films.
However, the board called "The
Miracle" an "obvious indignity to
religions personages and beliefs."
The film depicts the seduction of a
feeble-minded girl by a stranger
whom she confuses wilh a saint.
It previously was banned in the
state.

from Chuikov which said the Al
lied military patrols would hence
forth be free to cross a disputed
strip of Russian zone territory in
order to drive from West Berlin
to their border checkpoint duty as
signments. Soviet tommygunners had halted
both American and British MP's
starting last Monday night in what
looked like a test of the Allied
rights of access to the main high
way linking Berlin with West Ger
many, 100 miles away.

stop what he called unwarranted
heckling of the Western occupying

Douglas fir for the first eight
months of this year was 6,827,755,
000 board feet, only 240 million
under the 1951 record total for the
same' period.
That was the report Thursday of
Harris E. Smith, secretary of the
West Coast Lumbermen s Associa
tion. He said orders of 6.812,327,
000 were 100 million feet below
1951 and shipments totaling 6,795,'
542,000 were off 142 million.
A 37 per cent increase in August
shipments over July was credited
to an alleviation of the freight car
shortage.

Charles S. Lyon, who hat been
chiet counsel of the House com
mittee investigating tax scandals.
He announced Slack will return
to his former post as chief of the
appellate section of the tax divis
ion. Slack has been acting chief of the
tax division since November 16,
1950, when President Tmman fired
T. Lamar Caudle for 'outside ac
tivity." Slack has been under fire of a
Congressional committee recently
in connection with a St. Louis
grand jury'a Investigation last
year of the handling of tax cases
in that area.
