tin of Glendale, writes of the la
test Bakersfield quakes:
"The quake came at i few min
utes to four and was so sudden
and hard that I have little memory
of it. Luckily, I was standing at i
the sink or I would have been
severely cut from breaking glas
ses and dishes, Barbara came
within a few inches of having her
head smashed by the cooler vent
in the front room. All my heavy
furniture was moved several inch
es southward. . .The buffet did a
merry jig and almost ended in
the kitchen. The bottles in the
bathroom cabinet obligingly fell i
and broke in the sink. . .1 swept
and picked up over a half a large
box of broken glass. My sandwich
toaster was thrown from a kitch
en shelf clear into the dining
room. All the lamps In the house
were knocked to the floor, and
the lights and telephone went
dead.
"All this happened In fifteen sec
onds and I was scared to death.
Smaller tremblors have followed
every once in a while. . .1 wish
Hi (Hi Highland at the Glendale
Junction) had been here. He'd
never giggle and smirk at a gal
with quake-jitters again.
"It may interest you to know
that the quakes have caused Cali
ento Creek to be quite full, and
water has run down Cottonwood
Creek for the first time in 30
years (in the summertime). The
center of to-day's quake was Kern
Canyon, eight miles away."
Mrs. Carlton writes a few more
paragraphs of a personal nature,
then adds: "We hava had two
tremblors just In the time it has
taken me to write this. They are
small ones and the furniture
shakes a little and makes funny
noises."
