Two-Level Hillside Home Featured
In Modern Design To Be Erected
Scheduled (or early construction
is a two-level hillside house on
Hawthorne Terrace. . Designed by
Roseburg architect Alex Pavlov,
the house will be built by Western
Realty Company.
The house was oriented to a spec
tacular view over Roseburg and
the valley to the north. The living
room has glass walls both to the
north view and to a shaded ter
race on the south. Two o the three
bed rooms face the north view,
while the kitchen, dining and serv
ice rooms face the outdoor living
areas to tne south of the house.
Kast and west walls are virtually
windowless, to exclude early morn
ing and late afternoon sunlight.
Outstanding feature of the nouse
will be the stairway up from the
lower level, lo avoid duplication
of inside and outside stairways or
dinarily necessary, a stair was de
vised which Is enclosed on three
ides, and covered by a skylighted
roof, so it is usable as an en
trance stair as well as sheltered
communication between the
house's two levels. Liberal use of
planting further eases the trans
ition from outdoors to the house in
terior. On the lower level is a large
all-purpose room with a large win
dow wall, and a covered drive
through double car port.. Located
under the bed room wing, the car
port Is large enough to shelter four
cars when necessary, and the
ample driveway will accomodate
several more.
The plan features a circulation
pattern which allows access to any
room in the house without intru
sion into the privacy of other
areas. Tne utility room is central
ly located so laundry from the
bed rooms as well as the kitchen
is easily and quickly handled.
The utility room contains a closet
for outdoor and work clothes, and

In Cavalcade Assigned
Five persons have been cast as
members of the early Rev. Corn
wall family in the Umpqua Cav
alcade, director Horace Robinson
announced today.
Leslie Hatfield will play the part
of Rev. Cornwall, while his two
daughters, Sheila and Audrey, and
Michael Murphy will portray the
children. Mrs. Helen Shepard will
portray the Rev. Cornwall's wife.
They will portray the Incident
in which the Rev. Mr. Cornwall's
wagon was disabled, and while
friends urged them to continue in
another wagon, the family decid
ed to slay where they were
n?ar Oakland.
He eventually established one
of the first Presbyterian Churches
in the state.

Dates Opening Of Classes
Fall classes will start Sept. 8 at

Mrs. Hilt announced that there
will be classes for all egos, from
three years to adult, in tap, acro
bat and baton.

The dining room is an "el" off
the living room, and is adjacent
to the kitchen for easy serving.
French doors open to the dining
terrace. A breakfast bar between
dining room and kitchen, with a
sliding pass door, allows quickly
served informal dining. The kitch
en is compactly arranged, but
spacious enough for movements of
more than one person.
Detailing and construction, both
inside ana out, will be simple and
straight-forward, making for ease

Goats Take Top
Honors In Fair
Douglas County goats ran away
with the honors at the Josephine
County Fair this summer. Two sec
ond prizes, one first prize and a
grand championship prize were
awarded to residents of Roseburg
and Glendale in the August 20
judging.
In the milk goat competition Em
erald of Gold Ring won the first
prize in the senior doe class. The
animal, owned by H. W. Kreft
meyer of Roseburg, will take grand
championship of the Sannen breed.
Ruby fo Twin Firs won second
place in the kid class. Gertrude
won the grand championship in

Gov. Shivers declined comment on
the GOP action and Daniel said
he was "glad the Republicans ad
mit the Democrats have chosen
the best candidates." Whether

unanswered.
Republican leaders were frankly
confident that none of the desig
nated Democrats would withdraw.'
They poured praise especially on
Daniel and Shivers and passed a
resolution commending them for
saying they could not support Dem
ocratic presidential nominee Adlai
Stevenson.

dom, justice and peace in the

He told Legionnaires patriotism
"is not short, frenzied outburst of
emotion, but the tranquil and
steady dedication of a lifetime."
Then in his first major drive for
votes in the East, Stevenson said
there are men among us "who
use 'patriotism' as a club for at
tacking other Americans."
He continued: "What can we say
for the man who proclaims himself
a patriot and then for political or
personal reasons attacks the pa
triotism of faithful public ser
vants? "I give you, as a shocking ex
ample, the attacks which have
been made on the loyalty and the
motives of our great wartime chief
of staff. Gen. Marshall.
"To me this is the type of 'pa
triotism' which is, in Dr. John
son's phrase, the last refuge of
scoundrels."

Last night at his Springfield, III.,
headquarters, it was announced
Stevenson will begin a 7,600-mile
tour Sept. 5 which will carry him
into nine Western states.
Stevenson made only one refer
ence in Lis speech to Eisenhower.
He said: "The fact that a great
general and I are competing can
didates for the presidency will not
diminish my warm respect for his
military achievements. Nor will
that respect keep me from using
every honest effort to defeat him
in November."

SHARKS ARE HUNTED
PORT SUDAN An all-out
campaign against sharks in Mo
hamed Gul area of the Red Sea
is underway, but not for safety
purposes. The drive is designed
to produce revenue through the
sale of fish meal and valuable
shark oil. Recently a fisheries of
ficer caught nine sharks in 40 min
utes, including one that weighed
600 pounds, in these waters.
Fred Burgman, Medford,
Dies Suddenly At Selma
Fred Charles Burgman of Msd
ford, who was well known along
the coast and inland where he
has been engaged in the wholesale
selling and distribution of meats,
died suddenly while on a business
trip at Selma last Friday.,
Mr. Burgman, the son of Charles
and Frances Hull Burgman. was
born in Wellington, Ohio, on No
vember 4, 1889. He moved to Med
ford 19 years ago. He was a mem
ber of the Eagle's lodge and the
Teamsters and Chauffeurs Union
Number 902.
Beside his wife, Cecilia, he is
survived by one brother, Frank,
of Medford, and one sister. Mrs.
Tressa Fendring, Los Angeies.
Funeral arrangements were con
ducted Tuesday afternoon at the
Chapel Mortuary in Medford, with
the Rev. C. J. Linehan of the
Sacred Heart Catholic Church of
ficiating. Committal services were
held in Siskiyou Memorial Park,
Medford.

Portland Oregonian radio column
ist, William B. Moyes. has been
hired by a rival newspaper, the
Orpgon Journal. H's first column
will appear in the Journal Septem
ber 1 and will run six days a week.
It will be a general radio-tple-vision
and gossip column, similar
to his "Behind the Mike" column
which appeared in the Oregonian
for years.
David Eyre, managing editor of
the Journal, announced the em
ployment of Moyes Tuesday.
HITCHHIKERS JAILED
Two hitchhikers from Grand
View, Wash., wers arrested by
State Police Tuesday night and
are being held in the Douglas
County jail on charges of vagran
cy. They are listed as Clifton John
Steelman, 18, and a 17-year-old
companion, police said.
