Lifeguards Work, Too,
Recording Surf Data
LONG BEACH, Calif., I Long
Beach lifeguards don't spend all
their time sun bathing, charming
pretty girls and saving an occa
sional floundering human.
They also must record ocean
temperatures and surf conditions.
Each day, a guard takes three
thermometer readings and a gan
der at the Pacific's mood from
Long Beach's Horseshoe Pier. Lo
cal newspapers and radio stations
pass the information along to the
public, says Roy J. (Dutch) Miller,
lifeguard captain.

Oil Field Flooded
To Hike Production '
CENTR ALIA, 111., W A new
twist ' in oil production from a
Southern Illinois field calls for
building an artificial water sys-,
torn vast enough to suoply a city
of 200,000. I
The Texas Co. hopes its 25-acrp ;
project, to be completed in 1953, :
will help force 500 milium dollars
worth of vital oil to the surface:
of the Lake Centralia field.
The water will bo used to pro- i
vide pressure in recovering oil ;
which otherwise would be left un
derground after previously used
methods were slopped as no long-i
er economical. The Texns Co. says !
the field's life will be extended
20 years.
Five oil-bearing strala underly
ing 20,000 acres will be flooded,
A Texas Co. spokesman estimat
ed it would take 8,650.000.000 gal
lons of water to fill the space
voided by oil and gas since the
field ! discovery in 1937.
Charles Darwin was horn in 1809
and published the "Origin of Spe
cies" in 1859.
