GYPSY GENE
Knows How To Scare 'Em
Bicycling all the way from Palm
Springs to Sutherlin to protect
(and scare) prMty Sutherlin Tim
ber Days celebration princesses,
is "Prof." Gypsy Gene bearded,
sunburnt naturalist, who has made
the pages of Life magazine with
his scare" tactics and perform
ances in various parades and oth
er affairs.
Billed in Life, Sept. 25, 1949. un
der the caption to "How to reduce
a happy bride to tears in one
"nute flat," Gypsy Gene is a
ged individualist, who holds
the basic needs for life are
pure air and water, the
irth's magnetism and food.
He doesn't believe in meats and
airy products, but eats only raw
foods, including grass; no cooked
food, as he believes fire destroys
life-giving elements. Fruits, nuts
' and herbs are the the greatest
diet, he contends. Such a life, he
'believes, would stamp out all sick
ness, ine year arounn ne :ives
in the open, traveling like the
birds to a warmer climate when
winter sets in, and sleeping on
the ground with only a light blank
et. Gypsy Gene arrived in Sutherlin
Tuesday, and expects to stay ov
er for the celebration. He dropped
into the News - Review office
muching an ear of raw sweet corn,
and had the kernels well smeared
over his bearded face.
Gypsy Gene, whose real name
is Gene Mariani, is five feet seven
inches tall, but his 180 pounds
are all muscle. He became con
verted to the naturalist cause
about 10 years ago, he said. His
thick beard, he claims, protects
against germs. His long hair at
the back of his neck affords pro
tection for the optic nerve.
