Holiday Periods
Aren't The Only
Dangerous Times
Traveling during 1 non hollda
pertod doesn't guarantee your
safety on the highwuv, warns Pau!
L. Palterson of KiHshoro, presi
dent of the Oregon State Motor
Association, Oregon AAA. ctub.
There is always emphasis on
dansers facing the motorist on
holiday weekends such as Memor
ial Day, Fourth of July or Labor
Day, he said, but quite often oth
er oeriods are just as hazardous.
Most motorists heed the warn
ings of danger on holiday week
ends, the motoring official claims,
but too often become lax "when
th pressure is off."
Traffic accidents in Oregon will
gradually increase during the re
maining months of ttti vr P.(.
terson predicts. Past accident rec
ords show a steady increase In
accidents from now through De
cember. During 1951 there were J87 more
accidents in August than in July
and there were 684 more smash
tins in October than in September.
These statistics from the secre
tary of state's office point up the
great danger during the "non hoii
dav" months, Patterson said.
The motor association otficiat
urged motorists to "be constantly
aware of the danger on our hiah
ways. And vacationists must re
member that traveling during
week days does not make them
immune to accidents. Safe driving
terson concluded.

haps, the division said. Most com
mon error bringing death to the
walker was crossing a street be
19 persons and injured 190.

twees intersections, which kiliei
were run down from behind while
walking alonj the edge of the
roadway wilh the flow of traffic.
Other deadly pedestrian faults
were stepping from behind parked
vehicles, playing or running into
the roadway, and walking into the
side of a vehicle.
Wrong - doing by motorists also
swelled the pedestrian death toll,
the division pointed out. Driver
violations were evtdr-nt in 33 per
cent of last year accidents in
volving persons on foot, most com
mon of which was failure to yield
right of way to the walker.
Oregon law grants right-of-way
to pedestrians crossing within any
marked crosswalk or within any
unmarked crosswalk at an inter
section, when the walker is in or
closely approaching the driver's
haif of the roadway. This applies
at locations where there are no
traffic control signals. Pedestrians
do not have the right of way
when crossing at other points, the
division reminded.

HOW TO AVOID TAR STAINS .
The summer months invariably meon going to the
beach hot povements in fact summer more often than
not means tor stains.
Ordinary for is not too difficult for us to remove, wMt
fust one proviso. Tor stains cannot be allowed to get old
ond harden, because when that happens, tt is usually im
possible to remove them.
We therefore recommend, if your garment acquire!
e ter train, that you bring it in ta us os seen after staining
at you notice it. The tame day, if possible, tf not, the
next day.
That way, by pointing out the stain to us, we eon im
mediately attack it, and most likely get st out of the fabric .
entirely. If the tor stain is ollowed to age and horden, it
inevitably solidifies and at the same time imbeds itself in
the fibers of the fabric . . . ond the garment is ruined.
Much too high a price to pay, when, caught a few days
sooner, the stain might hove been removed entirely, and
the garment restored good os new.
So please let us say it again for added emphasis? BE
SURE TO BRING THE GARMENT IN AS SOON AFTER
STAfNfNG AS POSSIBLE,
And, remember, whether it's tor, some other kind of
stain, or just plain old dirt and grime that you wont clean
ed out of your clothes, you'll always find that you!! get
it done better when you bring it to us.
