Huae Glide Barn
Road After One
The biggest postwar moving job
in Douglas County rolling the
huge DeBernardi barn near Glide
across the re-routed North limp
qua i Highway was nearly com
plete today. ,
Moving the huge structure, built
in 1919 by C. DeBernardi, became
necessary when engineers re-routed
the new section of the North
Umpqua Highway around the
barn, separating it from the pas
tures. After quite a bit of hesitation,
B. 11, Mann of Riddle agreed to
move the barn for the county for
$2,000.
"This is my biggest moving
job," said Mann. "I don't think I'll
make much money on it but
I'm glad 1 did it."
Mann with his son, Richard, and
a helper, Jess Fanning of Riddle,
have worked more than a month
moving the 80-by-SO foot structure
just 700 feet.
"Besides being big in site, this
building was constructed sturd-
Cost Of Living
At All-Time High,
May Co Higher .
WASHINGTON l The cost of
living probably is at an all-time
high. And it could go higher.
This was indicated by a series of
government reports Monday which
said:
1. Food prices went up three
tenths of one per cent in June to a
point 14 per cent higher than just
before the Korean War mainly be
cause of grocery and meat price
increases.
2. The next overall cost-of-living
index due in about three weeks is
expected to show another climb
because rents are rising. The last
index on May 15 was only une-tenlh
of a point below the record.
3. Wholesale prices were un
changed for the week ended July
1, indicating the decline during the
past few weeks is leveling off.
A staff report to the Senate
House Economic Committee the
day before said prices may climb
to an all-time peak in the next MX
to 12 months up one to three per
cent due to increases in rents and
services, a recovery in clothing
prices, and a slight upturn in con
sumer durable goods.
The report said food prices would
not change much unless crop pros
pects were altered.

Rolled Across
Month's Work
Ily," Mann pointed out. "It must
weigh close to 100 tons."
The first two weeks of work
were spent just getting the barn
ready to roll. One slight hitch on
the project delayed the movers
several days.
They had to turn a corner and
the building was too big. Mann fi
nally maneuvered it around by
another route.
Huge logs were shoved through
the barn to furnish a strong base
for rolling it along.
