England's Labor Leaders Display
Little Understanding Of Enemy
By BRUCE BIOSSAT
There are times when British Labor party leaders
sound like hysterical schoolgirls. This seems to be one of
them. Their emotional tirades over our large-scale bomb
ing of the Communists' Yalu River power plants hardly
qualify them as sober world statesmen.
Clement Attlee and Aneurin Bev-
an, remarkably in agreement for
once, scream that war with Red
China has been brought closer by
our action. They declare also that
it affects adversely the truce talks
at ranmunjom.
As far as the truce talks eo. It Is
hard to see how they could be any
worse than they are right now.
They have been in progress for
jit aim iui ma mm
seveial months no constructive
step's have been taken. The Reds
are using them for a double pur
pose: to cloak their buildup be
hind a vastly stronger line in North
Korea, and to spout vicious propa
ganda like the fake charges
against the UN on germ warfare.
Whether war Die war hs
been brought nearer by the power
plant bonbings is doubtful.
Attlee and Bevan do not appear
to have studied Communist be
havior closely. Expert students of
the Reds will tell you that they
are not likely to be provoked by
any Allied move unless they want
to be. In other words, we make a
mistake if we assume thev will
react in accord with the patterns
of international behavior to which
we ate accustomed.
Too many people trying to read
Red minds see them as carbon
copies of their own. The Commu
nists do not think like we do. Re
member when Russia was boy
cotting the United Nations in 1950?
The reason given was that the UN
declined to recognize Red China.
A lot of alleged experts said Rus
sia would npvor return to the UN
until its conditions had been met.
The real students of Russia knew
better, and they were not surpris
ed when Jacob Malik calmly walk
ed in one day and took his seat.
When we agreed last year to
undertake truce talks, we took a
calculated risk. The risk was that
the Reds would use the quiet per
iod to cancel out our then existing
military advantage and re-fortify
their sagging lines. This they have
done. We no longer have that same
advantage.
The bombing of the Yalu power
plants was another calculated risk,
carried out in large part to re
store some of that lost margin to
our embattled forces. It was an

Important decision, and the British
ought to have known about it in
advance. But they ought hardly to
complain about it, since they read
ily acquiesced in the truce talks
that ultimately worked to the Reds'
advantage. This is merely one ef
fort to re balance the scales.
Amid the emotional torrent that
flooded out from fearful British
hearts, the words "fed up with
Korea" were heard. Do Attlee and
Bevan and their echoing chorus
imagine that we in America are
any less fed up than they?
It seems perfectly sensible that
we should take action in Korea
intended to keep us from being
thrown out of the peninsula, in
tended also to enable us to hold a
firm, genuinely defensible line
across that country's waist. We do
not want two years of hard fight
ing and bloodshed to be frittered
away.
The Azores islands in the Allan
tic Ocean are sometimes linked
poetically to the fabulous "lost con
tinent of Atlantis," the legandary
land that Arabian geographers dis
covered only in medieval writings.

High Court OK
SALEM un The Oregon 'su
preme Court upheld Thursday a
1909 law which bans secret frater
nities and sororities in public
schools.
The high court, ruling for the
first time on the 43-year-old law,
ruled that the Portland school dis
trict was within its rights In adopt
ing a regulation forbidding city
wide clubs of high school stu
dents, and prohibiting high school
graduates from belonging to the
clubs.
The case was brought by parenTs
of several members of the clubs.
Circuit Judge Charles H. Combs,
Lakeview, who heard the case in
Portland, ruled the clubs illegal.
Thursday's Supreme Court deci.
sion, by Justice Hall S. Lusk, up
held Judge Combs.
Justice Lusk wrote:
"They (the students) have no
constitutional right to be members
of clubs organized in the hish
schools, and composed of children
