Scottsburg Vote
Doesn't Affect
Race Leaders
Scottsburg precinct In late re
turns showed a strong liking for
Democrat Cecil Bever for sheriff,
bu. the 28 votes he received still
does not affect the lead given Al
vin E. "Al" Hughes in Friday's
primary election.
Hughes polled only five votes at
Scottsburg. Vernon Pouncey re
ceived 7, and Alfred Smith 4. The
Scottsburg vote gives Bever a total
of 1102 votes, but Hughes' total of
1283 is substantially above, and
cannot possibly be materially al
tered when the one remaining pre
cinct Tiller is heard from.
Pouncey's total Is 1010, and
Smith's 802.
The deputy sheriff's race on the
Democratic ticket was the only
close contest for Douglas County
positions. The Scottsburg precinct,
however, showed a slight reversal
over the county as a whole in its
preference for Republican candi
dates. The district showed a strong
preference for incumbent O. T.
Carter for Sheriff, who was-beaten
in the county by C. H. Baird. Cart
er was given 40 votes to 14 for
Baird. There were five for Eck
hardt and none for Billy Mohr.
For coroner, Dr. John J. Gra
bow polled 20 votes compared
with successful candidate L. L.
"Jim" Powers, 19, and 14 for Rob
ert Bellows. Charles Doerner was
strongly favored, 48 to 8, over Vic
tor Micelli. Elmer Metzger came
out a slight favorite, 26 to 23, over
Herbert Lindner for commissioner.
