products from present-day waste
or sawmill leftovers. He said kraft
paper mills alone, using sawmill
scrap, wore saving 400,000,000 feet
of timber yearly and would soon
be savieg 700 million feet, from
Oregon and Washington forests.
Once-Discarded Wood Material Now
Spells Profit In New Chemistry Age
Sawmills of the future in Oregon and Washington and
northern California may look like a Rube Goldberg con
traption, because industry leaders are now proclaiming a
new age of wood chemistry is at hand.
Hillman Lueddeman, Portland, president of the powerful
West Coast Lumbermen's Association, Is taking the fore
front in urging lumbermen to promote, encourage and fi
nance manufacturing plants and chemical works which
would use wood as a raw material.
The lumber chieftain believes
chemical plants can profitably be
built adjoining sawmills to use the
leftover scrap, trim, edgings, shav
ings and sawdust. He cited an
amazing variety of products which
can be made from wood by appli
cation of chemical treatments.
Edibles for man and beast, rank
high on Lueddpmann's list. Feed
ing molasses (and the region is
short of protein 4 feeds), wonder
dnigs, rayon, fibres, ship stores,
pulp products, plastics, tannins,
wax, ethyl alcohol, methalene, tur
pentine, lignin, explosives, and
land extenders are just a few of
the astounding list of goods ror
man which can be taken from
wood.
Lueddemann hailed many new
plants, almost unsung, which have
been built by the lumbermen in
recent years and which in fact in
troduce the new age of wood
chemistry. lie said the factory
at Longview which manufactures
eleven valuable commercial prod
ucts from Douglas fir bark is an
example. Rapid expansion of
plants making hardboard from
waste wood is another tipoff to the
future.
The lumber leader said the most
encouraging news is the disclosure
that this great potential wood
chemical industry can get its raw
Mass Picketing
Of Newspapers
Halted By Court
ROCKFORD, . III. in Circuit
Judge William R. Dusher Monday
ordered a halt to mass picketing
which has prevented publication of
Rockford's morning and afternoon
daily newspapers since Friday, i
A work stoppage involving mem
bers of the Rockford AFL Interna
tional Typographical Union started
March 24.
However, both the Morning Star
and the afternoon Register-Republic
had published without interrup
tion until Friday, when shoulder to
shoulder picketing prevented em
ployes from entering the plant.
Judge Dusher issued a temporary
injunction which prohibits mass
picketing and limits the number of
pickets to six two at each of three
entrances.
Judge Rusher ordered Sheriff
Kirk S. King to enforce the in
junction order.
Sheriff King told newsmen ha had
obtained a definite understand
ing from tha ITU that the order
would be respected. -
King said the order warned that
both sides in the dispute must re
frain from acts of violence or de
rision at tha picket line.
The American Newspaper Pub
lisher! Association'! special stand
ing committee on labor relations,
in a report on the strike at the
AN PA convention last week said
that "the Rockford issue is simply
an ITU demand that publishers
grant ITU control over use of out
side teletypesetter tape, .
That demand is contrary to fed
eral law. The Rockford publisher'!
offer to arbitrate was promptly re
jected by the union." .
J. H. rord,. secretary-treasurer,
Rockford ITU, contends the news
papers "have imported non-union
people in the composing room."
