to the Town of Myrtle Creek
against David C. Pitts.
The Town had filed suit (let
$39.18 allegedly owed on a water
line installation. The amount was
paid out of court except $2.23 re
mained as interest, and the judg
ment was ,. awarded for that

W. L. Ward, Roseburg
Resident, Dies At Yuma
Walter Lee Ward, 49, a resident
of Roseburg for about five years,
died April 20 at Yuma, Ariz. He
was born June 10, 1902, at Condon,
Ore.
Surviving are five brothers, W.
E. Ward of Keno, Nelson of
Grants Pass, Frank of Central
Point, Ted of Grants Pass, and a
ahlf-sister, Lillian Jarvis, RRocky
ford, Alberts, Canada.
Services will be held at 2 p.m.
Friday at Hull It Hull chapel in
Grants Pass. Rev. L. G. Kraser
will officiate, and interment will
be in Hillcrest Memorial Cemetery.

Listing In Drill
Points Explained
What happened to Ros'eburg's
Job's Daughters' drill team in
Saturday afternoon's state conven
tion competition? This has been
asked by many visiting delegates
and local people have wondered
why no recognition was jlveo this
team.
A check with the three judges
by Mrs. A. J. Ellison, guardian
of Bethel No. 8, reveals that the
Roseburg team actually polled a
total of 490 points, third highest
of any entry. ,
The Roseburg team was entered
in t'.ie novelty grouping, but the
judges felt it should have been
under exhibition grouping, which
included drill formations and a
marching step. Its drill was a folk
dance, and the Bethel felt that
dance steps would have eliminated
them from the exhibition class.
The other three teams in the
novelty grouping received 486 2-3,
486 and 485 points, respectively.
In total points, Portland Bethel
No. 1, Class A exhibition, had 498
points, and Portland Bethel No. 24,
Class B novelty, had 493 points
with Roseburg Class A third with
490.
Through a misundersanding,
said Mrs. Ellison, the judges did
not know the audience was not
given their entire report, following
the contest Saturday afternoon. It
was merely announced that the
Roseburg team was not considered
in the competition.
The judges expressed the opin
ion that the Roseburg team mem
bers should receive highest praise
and commendation for their per
formance, even though they could
not take the blue ribbon in the
group in which they were entered.

A powerful senate drive to force
him to cancel the seizure order
fell just short of the two thirds
majority vote It required Tuesday.
But Its Republican backers led
by Sen. Knowland of California
redoubled their cries of "dictator"
and cast about for other devices.
Actually 47 senators, 11 of them
Democrats, voted for the move.
and only 29 voted against it. Not
a Republican voted "." A switch
of four votes would have provided
the two thirds margin needed to
suspend Senate rules and -permit
action on Knowland's proposal to
forbid the use of any federal funds
in the seizure.
The Senate already had voted
Monday, 44 to 31, to ban- the use
of any money in a specific approp
riation bill to carry out the order,
but its backers said this was only
a gesture.
Fred Fields, Life-Long
Resident Here, Passes
Fred A. Fields. 74. life-long resi
dent of Roseburg and a retired
Southern Pacific employee, died
early today after a long illness.
He was born in Roseburg Jan.
15, 1878, the son of Alpeus and Em
ma Fields, Douglas County pion
eers. He was employed by the
Southern Pacific as district store
keeper in Roseburg and in Eugene,
and had been with the company
nearly 40 years before his retire
ment in 1943.
Surviving are a sister. Mrs. Clan
Fields Marks. Hoseburx: two neph
ews, Leland Marks, Redwood City,
Calif., and Clifford Marks, Rose-
Durg, ana a niece, miss jnargarei
Fields, Roseburg.
The body has been removed to
the Long and Orr Mortuary and
services will be announced later.

Kefauver Also Wins
Sen. Kefauver of Tennessee got
the bulk of the write-ins in the
Pennsylvania popularity poll 81,
442 from 7,839 of the 1,421 pre
cincts. President Truman was sec
ond with 21,358, followed by Ei
senhower with 17,712.
Even so, Kefauver had no guar
antee of any of the 70 Democratic
delegates from Pennsylvania.
Pledges to support the popular
choice, signed by many delegate
candidates, are not binding.
W. Averill Harriman, Mutual Se
curity director, had most of New
York's 94-vote Democratic delega
tion sewed up.
Harriman, "favorite son" candi
date until he launched his nation
wide bid Tuesday, is endorsed by
45 of the state's 62 Democratic
county chairmen.
Other political developments:
Herbert Brownell Jr., former
GOP national committee chairman,
joined the Eisenhower organiza
tion. His job:'. To work for delegate
support at the Chicago convention
in July.
Eisenhower was quoted as saying
the government's answer to exces
sive control "is more control" and
that there has been federal "abuse
of the taxing power." i

In Eastern Washington, Richland
was on fast time last year. This
year there was a tie vote and the
council decided to stay on standard
time. -;
Among the jumbles: At Shelton,
Wash., the Rayonier plant workers
voted lor standard time so the plant
will follow that vote. But the com
pany is going to put its adminis
trative office there on daylight
time.
Oregon's Malheur County was
spared the necessity of violating
state law this year. Last year the
county defied the governor's pro
clamation of daylight saving time
and clung to standard. That is be
cause Malheur, in the state's
southeast corner, already is an
hour ahead of the rest of Oregon.
It is in the Mountain Time Zone.

The Bataan and her Marine Air
Wing pilots, now on 'a second
tour of duty in the Korean area,

charging income tax evasion of

The indictment aeainst Sal eh

maximum penalty, if convicted, of
25 years Imprisonment and a total
of $50,000 in fines. Each of the
counts cites a maximum penalty of
five years in prison and $10,000
fine.

Airlines' Pride
Pride of the Alaska Airlines, Inc.,
is Its "Alaska Airlift," a cargo
service, reports Don V. Church
ward, district sales manager, who
was a business visitor in Roseburg
Tuesday.
Churchward is making a get
acquainted tour over the Oregon
territory, having recently been as
signed to the Portland office. The
airline started passenger and cargo
service out of Portland last No
vember, making direct flights to
Fairbanks ana Anchorage, from
which points it operates intra-Alas-kan
service.
In addition to daily passenger
schedules, the line operates two
or three exclusive cargo flights
from Portland weekly, Churchward
reports.
The plane service, he' says, is
widely used by contractors ship
ping plumbing and heating sup
plies, prefabricated building ma
terials, electrical supplies and
other such goods. Cargoes also
include a' large tonnage of per
ishable foods, particularly meat
and poultry. Another big item is
baby chicks. More than 150 ship
pers in Oregon and northern Cal
ifornia now are using the Port
land facilities, Churchward mys.
RECKLESS DRIVER FINED
Troy Mathon Owens, 2141 Holiis

10-day jail sentence Tuesday in dis
trict court after pleading guilty to
