ternal secretion of the pancreas
may be manifested in two ways,
by undigested or partially di
gested fats, and by undisies'od or
partially digested proteins ?n the
stool.
When the lipase of the pancrea
tic juice is lacking, there will bo
an excess of undigested neutral
fats. Few persons who cat con
siderable fatty foods are able lo
digest, all of tne fat, and normally
there is a small amount in the
bowel excretion. But In deficiency
of the pancreatic secretion, this
amount is greatly increased. The
bowel discharge is oily or gray in
appearance. This condition of ex
cess fat in, the slool may continue
for years without any serious dis
turbance to health, but it marks
an abnormal condition, and indi
cates that the body may be un
able to withstand an extra strain

600,000 Men Needed
For Service Strength
WASHINGTON Iffl Between
600,000 and 700,000 men will have
to be drafted or- volunteer to keep
the armed services at their
strength o 3i million men in
the year starting July 1, a Selec
tive Service official estimates.
This total, he added in an In
terview, does not include men ex
pected to re-enlist.
The estimate Friday takes Into
account half a million reservists
and draftees due for release dur
ing the year and assumes many of
them will re-enllst. It also takes
into account losses, through . cas
ualties and other reasons.
20 Youths Feared Dead
In Swedish Snowstorm

age schoolboys were feared dead
Saturday in an icy snowstorm
which lashed their holiday climb
ing expedition on 4,500 foot Mt
Areskuntan Friday night.
Led by a high'school gym Instruc
tor, they left to climb the moun
tain Friday morning and were Last
seen at the halfway mark.
Four rescue parties one from a
mountain troop regiment stationed
nearby are combing the slopes for
the 17 and 18 year old youths.

Students Win
Round In Fight
On Coin Phones
EUGENE : Students at the
University of Orfgon and Willam
ette University have won a first
round battle with the Pacific Tele
phone and Telegraph Company to
keep coin box telephones out of
livinc organization houses.
Phone company officials have
agreed to take out the coin boxes
and replace them with standard
business-rate phones in fraternity
and sorority ind co-operative liv
ing houses, provided a formal com
plaint to the Public Utilities Com
mission is dropped and the Univer
sity makes no objection to leaving
coin phones in dormitories.
It was the dormitory question
which started things in the first
place, on the Oregon State College
Campus. Some three years ago,
phone company officials say, col
lege authorities wanted to know
how to stop students in dormitories
from running up long-distance
phone bills for which the colleges
had to pay. The phone company
put in coin box phones as the ans
wer, and planned to expand that
program to other institutions.
Protest Effective
It got around to It at Willamette
and Oregon last summer, a nd add
ed fraternity and sorority houses to
the dormitories. Then, after school
had started in the fall, it prepared
to do the same thing at Oregon
State. The student protests brought
a halt there. Then Oregon and
Willamette students protested and
when coin box rates went up to a
dime recently, formal complaints
were prepared. That brought the
change reported Friday.
Phone company officials in Port
land said the whole question was
under study nationally.

Bonneville Power Administration's
request for funds to build a gov
ernment transmission line between
La .Grande and Baker, Ore.

quests for the year beginning July
1, they said the line is not needed.
The government proposes to
build a 220,000-volt power line cost
ing $2,250,000. The request for the
coming year is $1,173,000.

is needed to tie the Northwest
power pool to the Idaho Power Co.
transmission system.
Gale said in his statement:
"The surplus energy which might
be available for transfer over the
line is wholly insufficient to justify
the expenditure proposed.
"Existing facilities are complete
ly adequate for the needs of the
area and this proposed line would
be merely a duplication of these
facilities. . ."

The session opened Friday in
the Baptist Church with registra- i

state councelor, will have charge

Walk Away From Pen

prison farm here Friday.
They are 'George Frederick, 28,
serving three years on a larceny
conviction from Umatilla County,
and Walter H. Edmonds, 27, serv
ing five vears on a Lincoln County
Edmonds' parole was ordered
Jan. 21. Prisoners are held for a
