Snow Shortage Hampers Olympics
OSLO tf) The flaming Olympic
torch, borne high by the first of a
gigantic relay of 100 men on skis,
started Wednesday on its 170-mile
journey from Morcgdal, the birth
place of modern skiing, to the open
ing ceremonies of the winter Olym
pic games in Oslo,
At the same time the torch left
Moregdal, the Oslo Weather Bu
reau sorrowfully announced there
seems no prospect for snow in
Southern Norway "for at least
three or four days."
This prediction rules out anv dos-
sibility for good runs for the open

Myrtle Creek
Sutherlin
A first-half scoring spree by the
Myrtle Creek Vikings put them
within striking distance of second
place in the league as they dumped
the hosting Sutherlin Bulldogs
53-38.
It was Myrlle Creek's second
win in the league and Sutherlin's
sixth straight loss. Only one game
remains on the schedule before the
sub-district tourney and Myrtle
Creek must win that one on the
Roseburg court this Friday in or
der to tie for second place.
Jump To Lead
Led by Jerry Jones, the Viks
stomped Sutherlin to a fare thee
well in the first half. They jumped
to a 19-6 initial-quarter lead and
were on top, 29-9. by halftime.
The Bulldogs caught their brealh
in the second half, with Kenny
Wahl sparking the attack, to close
the gap to 45-28 by th tnird-quar
ter break. Wahl hit two quick bas
kets early in the fourth to whittle
the lead to 45-32, but it was too
late to overcome the top heavy
bulge.
The Bulldogs tied the score at
2, 3 and 5, but after those early
seconds of play the visitors took
over.
Jones was high-point man of the
night as he played one of his best
games of the season. Lee Leising.
er led I he Bulldogs with 11 points.
Sutherlin won the "B" game
preliminary, 34-27.
Another bright spot for the Vi
kings was the return of Dick Komp.
He was a top prospect last year,
but broke his arm in football this
season.

Tag-Team Match Slated
In Armory Ring Saturday
Yorg Cretorian and Kurt von
Poppenheim early this week issued
a challenge to the Parks and Gorky
brothers, but it was ignored.
However, two rough grapplers
loudly accepted the challenge.
Tbev were George Dusette and
Buck Weaver, a concentration of
wresting ability and stamina.
Weaver was especially happy to
get a crack at Yorg and Kurt be
cause they were the pair that
eliminated him from the battle roy
al last week. He has promised them
a full measure of revenge.
Buck did salvage some glory,
though, by returning to whip
Prince Omar in the first bout fol

quickly stopped with a neckbreak

went on to take final honors and
the $250 purse. Kurt proved his
ability by adding Cowboy Carlson's
scalp to his victory string.

It was just one of those cases
where one team was hot and the
