Broken down 837 patients have
been admitted for surgery, 697 for
medical treatment and 520 mo
thers. Total babies to Jan. 31 was
524. Coincidental, on the 11th
month anniversary the 500th baby
was born. The first day the hos
pital opened, 26 patients were ad
mitted. The third day of operation
the hospital was filled to capacity,
and has remained full with a few
days exception. Statistics indicate
a 98.3 per cent occupancy average.
Outpatients Treated
In addition to bed patients 3.262
outpatients have been treated. This
includes X-ray studies or treat
ment, laboratory studies, surgical
procedures and emergency care.
' As to services and equipment,
a recent comment, "For a small
hospital I have seen none that are
better equipped and staffed than
this one," was made by several
hospital men, insurance represen
tatives and others inspecting the
hospital. Equipment such as the
X-ray therapy unit are found usual
ly in only the larger centers. Since
Roseburg has a resident radiolo
gist, installation of the equipment
was requested.
In addition there Is complete
diagnostic X-ray deDartment head
ed by a radiologist and under
whose direction there Is a regist
ered X-ray technician. The labor
atory is directed by a pathologist
who specializes in the study of
tissues and diseases, and under
him is a laboratory technician.
These two departments provide the
doctor with complete diagnostic fa
cilities vital to his practice of med
icine. Equipment Listed
The obstetrical department Is
equipped with four incubators and
beds for 14 patients. Included is
an isolation nursery for babies that
develop contagious conditions.
There is a separate formula room.
The medical-surgical wing can ac
comodate 37 persons. Hospital cap
acity has been increased to 49 by
turning the solarium into a five
bed ward. All other rooms are
either two beds or private. All pa
tient rooms, including obstetrical
beds and nursery, are furnished
with oxygen outlets piped to a
central oxygen manifold. There is
also a nurse-patient communica
tion system. The surgery wing is
complete with a central supply for
sterile supplies, emergency room,
two surgeries and delivery room.
A 'record department is main
tained to compile and keep records
of each patient, his care and treat
ment. Many times from this in
formation, combined with infor
mation of like cases, causes of an
unknown disease are discovered
and later a cure effected. The
dietary department is headed by
a registered dietician. Each patient
is provided with a menu and allow
ed to select his food for the meals
each day unless he is on a special
diet.
New Equipment Installed
Shortly after the hospital was
opened, a new piece ot equipment,
an oxygen lock, was installed. This
machine was designed primarly to

tasas or the Incomplete expansion
of tlfe lung in infants or new boms.
Although not an iron lung, some of
the principals involved are based
upon the operation of one. It cost
nearly $1,000. This equipment was
responsible recently for saving the
life of a baby, its doctor reports.
Provided recently is a post sur
gery recovery room. One and,
when necessary, two rooms have
been set aside for the exclusive
use of caring for surgery patients
for their first 24 hours out of sur
gery. In these two rooms are con
tained necessary drugs and equip
ment and are staffed with compet
ent nurses. .
One subject everyone is Interest
ted in, is "What does it cost when
I go to the hospital," said McAlvin.
Per day rates are $11.50 for a two
bed ward, including general nur
sing care, food and bed. But, he
explained, this is quite disillusion
ing because of additional costs for
services, medicine and supplies
that a patient may not know of
until ready to leave. Because of
this it is not possible to compile,
per patient day costs, he explained.'
This average cost is $20.03 per
day, but includes all types of pa
tients, surgery, medical, obstetri
cal and convalescent. For some
the cost is in excess of this amount.
For others, it is less. -
Extra Charges Listed -
As for extra charges, drugs ave
rage $3.69, including adminisira
tion of penicillin, streptomycin,
ACTH and other "wonder" drugs;
$1.41 for laboratory costs and $3.42
for administration, x-ray, house
keeping, maintenance, surgery and
operation.
In answer to the question: Is the
hospital paying its way the best
answer, said McAlvin is to refer
back to the start of the hospital
project. At the time application
was made for federal assistance,
the hospital board had to' assure
the federal government that it
would have sufficient capital to
maintain and operate for two
years. The only solution acceptable
to the government was for the
business men of Roseburg to sign
security pledges. To date not one
of these pledges has been called
for. While some money was bor
rowed to retire the building ob
ligations, this will be paid with
collection of remaining outstanding
pledges.
Expansion is not deemed neces
sary at this time, despite the high
rate of occupancy, said McAlvin,
However, provision is made for en
largement at minimum cost. Heat
ing facilities are adequate to han
dle this expansion. McAlvin said
he could point to several new hos
pitals that have operated to only
25 or 50 per cent of capacity. He
complimented past boards in hir
ing competent consultants to study
the need of the Roseburg area be
fore planning the hospital. J
