Helmeted troops in the vicinity of the Armory each Mon
day night don't mean the place is under siege but if it
were, the same troops would surely be there. .
For stemming violence is one of the duties of the Oregon
National Guard.
And each Monday night the
Roseburg unit of the National
Guard trains at the armory. Of
ficially the unit is known as Com
Guard are for a three year period.

Training during the three-year
period consist of elementary
work during the first year.
Elementary Drill
This includes milittry cour
tesy, manual of arms, first aid,
elementary gun drill and the ba
sic items that go into military
training. .
The second and third years con
sist of advanced work in the heavy
weapons.
Six days of each year are al
located by the National Guard for
field work. The local unit splits
the six days into three weekends
during which the men go into
mountainous terrain and work as
sault problems.
On one weekend they set up
their heavy weapons to "soften"
the ."enemy" on Baughman Look
out. On another occasion Landers
Lookout was "captured."

for use by the governor to handle
any Internal matters involving

On Monday night civilians who
work all week on their ' peace
time occupations, train to be pre
pared in case of emergency.
And the "emergency" doesn't
necessarily mean war it could
be anything from quieting mob
violence to assisting at a time of
need.
Heavy Weapons Unit
Company "D" is a heavy weap
ons infantry company. In charge
is Capt. Fred Boyer. First Ser
geant is Lee Emery.
In infantry terms, "heavy weap
ons" means anything bigger
than small arms. Equipment used
by "D" company includes three
heavy and three light machine
guns, a 75 mm. recoiiess rifle,
three 81 mm. mortars, plus numer
ous rifles and pistols. In addition
the company has four trucks and
a jeep.
Each Monday some 65 men the
company is attempting to get
more trains with the weapons
and takes part in various train
ing classes. General training is
the rule for the. first hour, and
then the group splits up into
smaller units for specialized train
ing. But its not all work and no
play for the boys of Company
Provides Recreation t
The men innuallv attend sum
mer camp held for the last three
years at Ft l-owis. Wash. which
involves considerable work but al
so recreational side trips. The
group on various years has gone
to Mt Rainier, Bremerton Park
and Vancouver, B. C.
Last summer at camp the com
pany was judged to have the best
"mess" army lingo for camp
cookery, facilities in its regiment.
The annual summer camp con
sists of two weeks of range and
field work including mock war
fare in an attempt to see how the
41st division which consists of the
National Guards of Oregon and
Washington can work together.
In spite of the summertime hold
ing of the annual camp, it can
.- get cold nights, as Capt. Boyer can
testify.

for state treasurer rose to three
Tuesday when Sigfrld Unander an
nounced his candidacy.
Unander resigned last week as
chairman of the State Central Com
mittee. At that time It was ex
pected he would seek nomination to
the state treasurer's post.

and Fred Robinson, Medford, '

at the Armory for recruits, Boyer
said. Applicants must bo between

ular army, he said.
