Of Boy Scouts
"The men of tomorrow need
men of today to lead them," Wal
ter Smith, District Boy hcoul exec
utive, told the Kiwanis Club Tues
day noon. He spoke in connection
with Boy Scout week now being
nhservpd.
Bovs like to be Identified with
a group, and the kind of a group
to which they belong determines
what tney oecome, sam amun,
who has given 19 years 10 volun
teer .routine before becoming an
executive a year ago. Boys look
up to their leaders.
The Boy Srout program con
bines the ptouo spirit with crei
tive thinking and action. Boys
contain a great deal of energy,
and that built along creative lines
develops them Into worthy citizens
of tomorrow.
"We take bovs and elve them
a nroeram." Smith said. "They
think of the Individual circle. This
is found in the patrol, which li a
part of the troop. Next comes
the district the council and the
combined councils."
The Scout program oners boys
an opportunity to meet together,
to see how other boys look and
act. It fosters world brotherhood
and spreads world ideas. It makes
the hnv nee the whole slcture
with themselves injected Into the
picture. '
The work tenches creative actly
Ilv. in teaching what makes things
tick; pioneering spirit of explor
ation, exempuiiea in sucn groups
as the Order of the Arrow; the
way of life, as seen in such pro
grams as when the scouts take

Scouting, the speaker said, at
tempts to give boys an interest
in something specific, which may
determine their lite work. For
example an Eagle Scout who was
a bird fancier was chosen by Ad
miral Byrd for his South Pole
trips. On tho third trip he was
assistant in command. Through
his hobby he had learned his life
work.
Scouting givf-s a sense of be
longing to others. The boys wear
the uniform with pride. They feel
a part of the world organization,
and many literally gave the "shirt
off their back" In a program of
that name to aid Europeans, Smith
pointed out.
Summing up, he stressed that
to give boys this type of train
ing, they need men to lead them,
"because the boys can't lead
themselves. Tney need the best
men so that they may learn about
brotherly love, learn about each
other and learn that bjys in other
parts of the world think as they
do."

Leroy Poole has asked for prayers
lor her four-month old son, Roger
Leroy Poole, born without a gall
bladder.
S.ie said doctors have told her
the baby has about two months to
live.
Witt no other hope, she made
the plea for prayers through the
Michigan City News-Dispatch.
Poole, a machinist, and tiis wife
said "we're not looking for finan
cial help or pity. What we're ask
ing now is that people pray for
Roger."

Oakland's New Fire '
Hall Nears Completion '
Workmen were putting the finish

ground hog superstition, but they
all agree on the prediction of an
early spring. The reason? Cats,
dogs and cows have started shed
ding their winter coats.
