The meeting was attended by

building consultant, and Richard
Sorick, auperintendent of second
ary education both of the State
Department of Education.
The first proposed solution In

classrooms and a number of re
visions to the present building
Thii would provide for the addi
tion of a home economics depart
ment. Cost of this program would
range from 10,000 to $50,000, ac
cording to Eugene Fisher, chair
man of the Elkton school board.
The second proposed method
would be to construct a new gym
nasium and convert the present
gym to classrooms and a manual
training ihop. Thii proposal also
providei for a new heating plant
and a new kitchen and cafeteria.
Cost would be some $15,000 for
revision of the present structure,
plui $150,000 to $160,000 for con
itruction of the gym, Fisher said.
Also under consideration is the
addition of one new teacher, bring
ing the staff to six instructors.
A district election to decide on
the purchase of the plot of ground
will be held Jan. 28. Voting on
new construction proposals will be
held later.

ALTERNATE ROAD ROUTES SURVEYED Preliminary loca
tion work has been done to establish comparative data on al
ternate proposed roads between Sutherlin and Lone Rock, re
ports Wallace Hector, county road engineer. The above map,
prepared by Mr. Hector for The News-Review, shows the ap
proximate routes of the two roads, concerning which there is
a current controversy. The Sutherlin-Oakland community is
urging construction of the so-called "Short Doute," by way of
Bradley and Gassy creeks to connect with the Calapooia road.
The county court has given tentative approval to the "River
Route," between Lone Rock and Wilbur, with a cut-off leading
directly into Sutherlin by way of Cooper creek. The "River
Route," Hector reports, actually is shorter by 1.1 miles than
the so-called "Short Route," while opening up 26 miles of ter
ritory not now served by a road. Differential in cost is not
great, Hector says, as construction., of the "Short Route"
would involve extensive improvements to the Calapooia road

wars and are engaged in a third
neriod of emergency. The demands
on our timber supplies have been
great, and u we are now to sus
tain local economies and have sup
plies of timber available for future
emergencies it is going to laKe

road system into these areas.
In stating the Forest Service
policies, Stone noted that the pol
icy called for "devoting the land
to the most productive use for the
permanent good of the whole people
and not for the temporary benefit
of Individual or companies." De

life and forage of the national for

under such controls as are nec
essary to provide for perpetuation

year-old Wilson Curtis' extrava

his undoing.
While working at I men's cloth
ing store as a wrapper and mailer
during the Christmas shopping sea
son, Curtis mailed himself a suit
and three tu?s without bothering
to drop $76 in the till.
He lavished 38 cents worth of
stamps on the package.
Postal inspectors returned the
package to the store, with a note
that it needed only 18 cents in
stamps. A checkup followed.
Curtis pleaded guilty to petit
larceny Wednesday. Judge Perry
Sellers sentenced him to 11 months
and 29 days at the Shelby County
Penal Farm.
