Stanley Takes Over As Cards' Manager I Myrtle Point Nips
Reedsport Quintet
ST. LOUIS - UP) - Edward Ray-
mond Stanky steps gingerly into
his new role as manager of the
St. Louis Cardinals today con
fronted by a novel problem. Can1
he win a starting position on his i
own team?
It's definite, says the former New
York Giants second baseman, that
'he will serve as a nlaying man
ager. However, the "ifs, buts and
maybes" begin to pile up when he's
asked where he will insert himself
in the Redbird lineup. j
With only a few short hours of
experience as a manger (he signed
a two-year contract with Owner
Fred Saigh around supper time
yesterday) Stanky says he isn't
ready to make that decision yet.
Or any others for that matter.
The deal that broucht Stankv tn
the Cardinals to replace the ousted
Marty Marion as manager has been 1
kicked around for a few months
now. Yet it took almost three hours ,
of actual conference between Eddie
and Saigh to agree to terms.
Saish held out for a one-year
term, two years at the maximum.
Kddie originally wanted a three-
year contract.
For giving up their peppery sec
ond baseman, the National league
pennant winners received veteran
pitcher Max Lanier and outfielder
Chuck Dierin from the Cards.
As for the price tab Saigh placed
on Stanky's services, it's anybody's
guess. But the baseball men who
say they know about such things
place it at about $32,500 a year.

Belated reports from Reedsport
caused by last week's storm, snow
the Braves opened the season with
46-45 loss to Myrtle point.
The Reedsport gym turned into
the arena for a two-man scoring
duel between Al Cunningham of
Myrtle Point and Duane Leggett
of Reedsport. When all the points
were counted, Cunningham had
won with 29. Leggett was just a
basket off with 27.
As in many another battle, the
final score was determined at the
free throw line. This was a bad
department for Reedsport which
connected only It of 28 free throws.
Reedsport had three chances to
pull the game out of the fire in
the final two and half minutes. The
score was tied at 45-all with time
to go before a free throw put the
Bobcats ahaad. But in every case,
the Braves got over anxious and
threw the ball away.
