Increased Supply Of Coins
Foreseen By Treasury
WASHINGTON (AP) The treasury is berinnimr to
see Its way out of an acute shortage of coins.

bank3 have rationed some coins among member banks in

thinks there will be enough coins
to meet demands of the nation's
expanding economy.
He said mat coin rationing by
deferal reserve banks is expected
to end next month at the latest.
The usual policy is to permit un
limited exchange of dollar bills
for corns.
Here is how the situation devel
oped and what the mint is doing
about it, as outlined by Howard. '
It costs money to make money
25 cents tor a pound of copper to
mane lv pennies.
The mint asked Congress for an
appropriation big enough to pay
for producing 1,750,000,000 coins
in the year which began July 1
an output that would have taken
about 7,000 tons of metal.
But Congress allowed the mint
funds for production of only 1,325,-

On top of that, nickel and copper
are scarce defense materials, for
one month, September, the mint
couldn't get any copper at all to
make pennies.
Demand Increases
At the same time, the dmand
for coins has been increasing
sharply. Mor states and cities are
putting on sales taxes, and that
takes more pennies. More and
more buyin of all sorts of things
is being done through corn-operated
vending machines.
Because of its shortage of funds
and materials, and the growing
demand, the mint couldn't turn out
coins as fast as they were needed
in the business marts.
The treasury appealed to citizens
to turn in their piggy bank hoards
of coins and get savings stamps
or dollars instead. That brought a
lot of corns out from hiding.

Howard said. The Denver mint
went on two shifts, six days a
week, and the Philadelphia mint
stepped up from the usual to hours
of producUon to a 50-hour week.
From July 1 through November,
the mints turned out 783.000,000
coins reaching a peak of 190,
000.000 in October, 180,000,000 in
November.
The daily output has been run
ning from 8,000,000 to 10,000,000
consuming from. 30 to 40 tons
of metal.
Howard said that this production
should take care of demand if
the treasury program for keeping
coins in use is followed and, by
January, the supply should be
more tham ample.
