PORTLAND UP) The stale
should learn to economize rather
than look (or new sources of in
come, speakers told the Portland
League of Women Voters here, j
"We must cut expenses to fit
our income, not expand our in
come to fit expenses," Giles
French, state legislator and Sher
man county editor, said, j
He urged especially cuts in
school and welfare programs. j
Howard Morgan, Monmouth
farmer and former legislator, op
posed any cuts in welfare or school
programs, but advocated other
economies. j
He was critical of the cost of op
erating Oregon Technical institute
at Klamath Falls and what he
said was the secretary of state's
practice of spending $1600 annually
for a press clipping service. j
Morgan also opposed a sales tax,
and suggested that any further
money be raised through income
taxes. I
