SALEM UP! Charles Wil liam Walsirom, Oregon City, has been nominated for admission to the U. S. military academy on July 1, 1052, Congressman Walter Nor blad announced from his Wash ington office. Walstrom is In the armed forces, as are the three alternates. The alternates are Donald Jamea Mayes, Oceanside, first; Kenneth W. Nutt, Beavercreek, second; and Norman L. Hall, Ger vaia, third. AH Oregon School Buses Pass Safety Inspection SALEM Of! There now are 1,475 school buses in the state and all of them have been inspected by the state traffic safety division, Capt. Walter Lansing, traffic safe ty director, said today. Lansing said the number in creases about 100 a year. Half of them are operated by school dis tricts, and the other half by pri vate contractors. That was the report given lo cal Toastmasters at their regular meeting Tuesday night by three mmbers who attended the area conference in Eugene Thursday, Oct. 11. Tom Patty, Bob Harvie and Walter Acklev attnHiH th conference. The group met at the home of Keith Phillips, 645 South Main St. Ed Drysdale was toastmaster and Allan Knudtson handled table topics. Speakers who qualify in the March contest will be eligible for zone competition. Those who are selected from the zone constest will be sent to the international rivalry. Chartering Discussed Plans were discussed for char tering Port Umpqua 990 at Reeds- port as a member of the Interna t i o n a 1 Toastmasters Thursday, Oct. 25. Four local members plan to attend. A program to increase member ship was outlined and discussed, with emphasis placed on the holding of members after they have joined. Inflation spirals, their causes and remedies were discussed by Norman Wicks in a speech en titled "Money." By MRS. ELDON THOMPSON Mrs. Vernon Hart of California- is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Stabley Wallace, and family here. Mrs. Hart is expecting to join her husband, who Is in the service in Panama. Chad Hetrick is back home from a Portland hospital where he has been confined for some time after undergoing surgery. Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Young blood moved last Wednesday to Black Butte route, Cottage Grove, where he has a sawmill. Bernell Goins assisted them. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Billings and family moved over the weekend into the cabin vacated by the Youngbloods. The cabin is located in what is known as the Dowdy mill camp. The house vacated by the Billings, and known as the Eichler house, is to be completely remodeled and made into an office building for the Forrest Veneer company. Work on this project was started Monday. No school was held either Thurs day or Friday as the teachers, Mr. Golden and Mrs. Mattoon, at tended institute at Roseburg, Mrs. Golden and Kathy visited her folks in Salem from Wednesday through Sunday. Ted Lyman was off from work Monday suffering from asthma. Leanne Buckleo of Langlois is spending two weeks here with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Or ville Hodges. I.eota Arzie o Scotts Valley was rushed to Cottage Grove hospital Friday during the night for an emergency appendectomy. Leota is reported recovering satisfacto rily. Bernell Coins hit the jackpot Sat urday morning when he had been out hunting only an hour by suc cessfully bagging a big four-point buck and a bear on the John Sowles Dlace. Mrs, Maxine Thompson and Patty and Faye of Roue River spent the weekend at the J. R. Sowles home. A special school meeting has been called November 5 at 8 p.m. to allot special levy money for: $175 for new desks; $50 for films; $50 for maps; remainder for lights, buildings and grounds. This is due to a cut in the budget Steve Rentz was brought to the Verl Miller home Sunday from the hospital where he had been confined for some time.
