subcommittee Jessup gave It
false testimony in declaring under
nam mat tne united states nas
never considered recognition o f
Communist China." Earlier, Jes
sup had said Stassen made erron
eous sworn statements about him.
Challenges Again
Stassen went back before the
internal security subcommittee
yesterday and again challenged
the accuracy of Jessup's testi
mony that neither he (Jessup) nor
Ihe State department generally
has ever considered recognition of
Red China to the extent of favor
ing it.
Indications are that Stassen will
deal again with a controversial
round-table conference on China
policy sponsored by the State de
partment in October, 1949.
Stassen has said a "prevailing
group" at the conference, which he
attended, advocated steps which
would "hasten the victory of the
Communists" in China.
The department made the
transcript of the conference pub
lic Thursday and said Stassen was
"factually incorrect" in his de
scription of it. Stassen, on the other
hand, said the transcript "proved
the truth" of his description of
it.
Monday's testimony will give
Stassen an opportunity to respond
to a new challenge from Owen
Lattimore, Johns Hopkins univer
sity professor, whom he had
named as leader of the "prevail
ing group" at the round table ses
sion. Stassen had listed five other par
ticipants in the conference as stick
ing ciose together with Lattimore
on the subject of recognizing Kcd
China, "thus attempting to insin
uate," Lattimore said, "that our
views or expressions were iden
tical." "You should know that this Is
false," Lattimore wrote Stassen.
Lattimore than challenged:
