Attitude Of 'Beef, Metals'
Near 'Deliberate Defiance'
NEW YORK -VP! Economic
Stabilizer Eric Johnston says the
attitude of "beef and metals" to
ward price controls is almost "de
liberate defiance," and the govern
ment plans to crack down if the sit
uation continues.
Johnston, former president of the
II. S. chamber of commerce, maae
the statement in addressing 1,500
persons Friday night at a dinner
meeting in connection with the 74th
, annual convention of the Ameri
can Bar . association.
" He said a recent amendment
gives President Truman power to
strike out income tax deductions
which have a basis in price or
wage control violations.

Johnston declared:
"This is a weapon we are pre
pared to use whenever we have no
other choice whenever the sta
bilization program is threatened
by deliberate defiance.
"We may be approaching that
situation right now with respect
to some of the most important

Without elaborating on his ref
ences to "beef and metals,"
Johnston continued:
"I want to serve notice right now
that we are going to give no quar
ter to black marketeers, and will
use all of our powers against
them."

Johnston did not enlarge on the
tax amendment, either.
Johnston, speaking extemporan
eously, disgressed from his pre
pared text, but he authorized its
use.
He claimed that the consumer
price index has risen only o n e
percent since ne nas been in omce.
Beef Situation

The beef situation is tightening
up. Many signs indicate it will
probably get worse before it gets
any better.
Even the army is having trou
ble buying meat. It announced that
it might have to seek to buy beef
overseas.
According to the army quarter
master market center at Chicago,
some major packers have not been
able to bid on the army's request
for 13,000,000 pounds of boneless
beef needed to feed troops through
out the nation.
The latest difficulties of t h e
packers stem from sharply in
creased costs of beef on the hoof
increases which they say have
more than onset tne penny-a-pound
boost the packers were al
lowed by the Office of Price Sta
bilization. Wholesale beef prices are ad
vancing. Supplies in the big pack
ing houses are running low.
Ranchers are holding back their
cattel. More meat is reported
finding its way into the black mar
ket. Office of Price Stabilization in
vestigators were dispatched this
week to Chicago, Cleveland, Phil
adelphia and other major packing
centers.

Chances For Re-Election Next Year

President Truman "can beat anybody at the polls in 1952
brought Republican retorts that the GOP presidential nomi
nee will win if he wages a fighting campaign.
And ' a Republican's prediction that Gen. Dwight D.
Eisenhower vill be "available" for the party's nomination

available for the Republican nom
ination." Flynn declared the Republicans
"can t beat somebody with no
body," and that they have nothin
but "blatherskites and stuffed
shirts."
Senator Raft Dissents
As for Flynn's forecast that Mr.
Truman can beat anybody, Taft
commented: W
"The Republican nominee, if he
puts on the right kind of cam
paign, would defeat Mr. Truman.
But it must be the right kind of
campoin."
Taft indicated he thinks the
wron sort of campaln would be

DETROIT UP) Some auto
industry experts are saying the
car makers cannot build 1,100,000
passenger cars in this year's final
quarter.
That's the maximum output total
set by the National Production
authority for the October-Decem
ber quarter. Rumor has it the
NPA figure will be further re
duced because of materials short
ages. Industry authorities say, how
ever, that regardless of NPA ac
tion, the car companies will not
be able to find enough material
to build more than 800,000 pas
senger cars in the final three
months of this year.

Bandman, Wife Accused
Of Neglecting Children
VAN NUYS, Calif. UP) Band
leader Pete Daily and bis wife,
Faye, were at liberty on bonds of
$500 each Wednesday after police
signed a complaint charging them
with neglecting their six children.
Officers said that one of the chil
dren, a 13-year-old daughter, was
found intoxicated on a bench three
blocks from the Daily home, and
that she said two teen-age boys
bad given her some vodka.
Fire, breaking out on a service
porch of the Daily home, drove
the other five children into the
street. They range in age from two
months to 14 years.
