Little Girls Grow Up Suddenly
Little girls have a way of grow
ling up all of a sudden, as any
parent knows.
This fact has been 'discovered
by Fred Cole, of California, noted
principally as a manufacturer of
bathing suits. Having an 8-year-old
daughter of his own, Cole
noted that the young lady had de
cided ideas about clothes. So he
decided to add some school
clothes to his line, just to keep
down the overhead. Says he: I
"I conducted a sort of Gallun
poll among the 4-to-12-year-o 1 d
crowd. One day we had 60
Brownie friends of my daughter.
Penny, at the house. 1 asked
them if they liked cowboy clothes,
and got all kinds of answers, in
cluding the perfect squelch
That's sissy stuff.' One little girl
eeen called them 'old fashioned.' "
So Mr. Cole starting making a
line of girls' school clothes with i
a ladylike look, planned to bridge
the gap between toddlers and
teens. They are mostly madt of
sturdy corduroy, consisting of
the beloved skirts, shirts and
jumpers of they- older sisters, and
all can be worn with assorted
blouses. His designer, Margit Fel
ligi, mother of four children un
der 8 years of age, comments:
"You live up to your clothes.
A child will behava like a little
lady in a pretty, feminine dress,
or like a tomboy when she wears
jeans."
DRESS-UP COLORS
Color's predicted to be most pop
ular for dressy late afternoon and
informal evening frocks include
striking combinations of black
and white, high shades of red
favored for young date costumes,
honey shades often a-glitter with
pearis and ever popular black.

NEW YORK (NEA) Look
ing pretty while she's waiting for
the stork Is not just a womanly
whim. It's a pleasant duty. Going
about In shapless dresses, her hair
hooked behind either ear with a
bobby pin, is one way for a woman
to get through the waiting time.
But it isn't the way most attracive
to her family and friends.
Surprisingly, fashions that make
up a maternity wardrobe with a
real flair are budget-priced. And,
as Stork Styles design suits, they
are planned to bo interchangeable.
A black velveteen skirt, for in
stance, may be worn either with a
silver lame jacket or a jacket in
Black Watch plaid. Thus, two jack
ets plus one skirt make a wardrobe
for both daytime and eve'
ning during the waiting days.
The jacket in silver lame has a
cardigan neekline with stand-u p
collar and big patch pockets that
have sparkling button trim. Its
daytime counterpart, In the plaid,
has black velveteen notched col
lar and ruffs, self-buttons and
slanting, slit pockets.
Smartest Dress
Still Needs Fft-
"The smartest dreis in the world
Is nohing if it docs not fit you,"
warns Hattie Carnegie. "To the
hours of shopping time searching
for the dress of your dreams, never
fail to add one more, all-important,
half-hour in front of a triple
mirror with an expert fitter." Car
negie secrets of fitting perfection:
make sure the waistline has "con
tour," curving down at the back;
adjust side seams to avoid either
bulges or tightness at the bosom
or thighs; make sure that a tai
lored collar fits snugly against the
back of the neck.
Rounding out this trio, there's a
dressy sui tin charcoal ottoman
that could see both daytime and
evening wear by a mere switch
of dickeys. The concealing middy
top can be worn loose or belted.
The dickey that comes with the
suit is a soft pink ottoman studded
with pearls and rhinestones. The
three-quarter length sleeves may
be worn pushed up; have smooth
fitting cuffs that close with jew
eled buttons.
'YOUR' COLOR
Take a tip from designer Hattie
Carnegie for a new way to wear
your scarf and add a lovely aura
of "your" color to your new fall
black, grey or navy. Miss Car
negie tucks a huge square of luscious-pastel
chiffon on satin under
the outside of her dress or suit
collar to form a soft, pretty frame
for her gentle blonde coloring.

Wider Frame Set
For Hair Styles
Your head will go round1 and
round this fall predicts New York
hairdresser John Hall.
Mr. Hall, well-known for his
trend-setting, says that only t h e
wider hair frame for the face and
flat-top hairdo can balance the new
fashion silhouettes wide skirts,
nipped-ln waistline and hats with
a forward tilt. Says he:
"Waves will accomplish most of
the coif width to give a soft look.
There ire no chignon arrangement
or shingles In the fashion beauty
book for fall."
The popular page-boy hairdo, he
says, will again be worn at the
sides to give width to the face.
However, since the page-boy nor
mally sets flat at the back of the
head, some new arrangement will
have to be found to give the full
ness necessary there. Flatness at
the back of the head will give a
ski-jump silhouette when worn with
a forward-tilt hat.
Hair will be a little longer this
fall because more of it will be
needed to make the elaborate
waves, swirls and dips that the
well-coifed girl will wear, he says.
Hair ornaments will be popular.
You'll see Alice-in-Wonderland
headbands in rhinestones on spring
wire which can be adjusted to bs
worn as neckbands, tortoise shell
clips with metal teeth and rhine
stone hair sprays.
STOW AWAY
The popular plastic raincoat for
men that folds away to pocket size
now has a companion in the rain,
new flexible latex rubbers that fit
into a pouch, too.
