Telephone Co.
Begins New Move
For Rates Boost
SALEM UP) Pacific Tele.
phone and Telegraph company has
launched a new drive to gain a
$.5,188,000 increase in Oregon tele
phone rates.
The company filed a new appli
cation for the rate increase with
Oregon Public Utilities commis
sioner George H. Flagg and agreed
to drop a circuit court suit which
sought to overrule Flagg's rejec
tion of a similar increase in April,
1950.
The company said the new In
crease would net the firm only
$2,500,000, the rest going to pay
federal taxes.
"This repricing request." F. A.
Dresslar, vice-president and gen
eral manager said, "is necessary
to meet sharply mounting costs,
Increases apply to both toll and
recently negotiated wilh the union.
Incrascs apply to both toll and
exchange rates, and the public
and semi-public coin box rate is
raised from 5 cents to 10 cents
per call."
' Today's application the onlv
one the company now has before
the commissioner brings ud to
date the company's urgent need
for added revenues." Dresslar
said.
The rale increases would affect
all Oregon telephone users.
In explaining the reasons for
the increase, Dresslar noted, "It is
a regrettable and incongruous sit
uation, but for every dollar of
wage Increase brought about by
the recent negotiatoins, approxi
mately the same amount must be
taken from telephone users for fed
eral taxes."
Hearings will be held on the pro
posed rate increase in September.
