That's what this year's crop of sirl graduates needs
to make the grade in big-time

the Tobe-Coburn school for fashion
careers, and added:
'There'a too little yeast In the
young these days. . . the majority
of youni graduates that Dour out
of the colleen every June are
not kicking over anv traces
they're plodding, along as meekly
ana mildly as anv conservative
and cautious old dobbin."
Clameur Jobs In Demand
There are more job opportun
ities than there are girls to fill
them this year, aaya Ruth Hough
ton, director of the placement bur
eau of Barnard college, New York.
The trouble la that the girls all
want glamour jobs, while the open
ings available often aeem unro
mantic. The greatest number of job op
portunities for young women this
year, she says, are in the fields of
physics and mathematics, chemis
try, social work, librarians, the
medical field) and secretarial work.
She adds:
"There is a great demand for
girls with physics or mathematics
majors, in all kinds of work
industry, business, teaching aud
government work."
Mathematics majors, says Miss
Houghton, are being offered $55 a
week in actuarial work for insur
ance companies, while the govern
ment pays the highest salaries. A
22-year-old with no experience can
earn a starting salary of 13,100 a
yesr from Uncle Sam.
Cirls Net Skilled
The jobs most wanted by the
girls, however, says Miss Hough
ton, run in this order: publishing
houses, advertising agencies, radio
and television, research and psy
chological work. She adds:
"Most of the girls have no skills,
and most of the jobs require a
knowledge of typing and ahorthand.
So we have the old problem of
fitting the girl to the job."
Despite all the hurdles, this
year'a graduate has a rosy future,
in the opinion of Sarah Pennoyer,
vice president of James McCreery
and Co., another big New York
department store. Says she:
"Any youngster arriving on the
scene at thia moment comes in
under a lucky business star. As a
nation, we must produce all we
can and sell all we produce. What
an opportunity for Uncle Sam's
daughter, provided she's chip off
the old American block!"

Dorothy Shaver, president o(
Lord and Taylor, New York, says
to the new generation:
"A different world haa been
built In my time. Teaching men to
live in it will happen in yours."
Stephanie larlwright, noled fab
ric designer and manufacturer,
says:
'Today's kids all aeem to want
to start at the top. without taking
time to learn the ropes."
But Sarah Uibson Blading prese-
dent of Vassar college, takes slight
issue with those who want our
prospective csreer girls to be sat
isfied with bait a loaf, and advises
them:
Don't be too timid to reach for
what you want, and don't aet your
sights too low.

Mickey Cohen kept at least
two safe deposit boxes under fic
ticious names, say federal witnes
ses, during the period he is ac
cused of evading $156,123 in income
taxea.
Miss Aurora Incl testified that
Cohen rented boxes under the
names of Allsn Weiner and Don
ald Duits while ahe was employed
at varioua Hollywood banks.
U. S. Atty, Ernet Tolin said ad
ditional witnesses would tell o f
other boxes rented by Cohen un
der aliases.
Miss Lend waa a witness at the
trial of Cohen and hia wife La
vonne on charges they they failed
to pay enough income taxes in
IMS. 1947 and IMS.
Bank President Resigns
Another witness waa a bank pres
ident -who resigned after public
disclosure he loaned Cohen 135,000.
He ia Harold W. Brown, former
head of the Hollywood State bank.
He left his post "to avoid embar
rassment to the bank" after Cohen
told the Kefauver senate crime
investigation committee of the loan
last November. Brown testified
the money was repaid.

ued at 1250,000 in IMS. Cohen and
several of his men were charged
in March, 1949, with numerous vio
