Turns To Problem
Of Two Platoons
SPOKANE, Wish. UP) Seated
on Die N. C. A. A. television band
wagon with one foot ready at
the brake th Pacific Coast con
ference turned its attention today
to matters of money and man
power. In the manpower category is the
problem of two-platooning, which
the football coaches have discussed
and passed along to the athletic
directors. Recommendations of
those two groups go on to the fac
ulty representatives, who will
make the final decision.
Not the slightest hint has come
from the coaches as to their
wishes. Prior to the opening of the
four-day sessions Monday it was
indicated four coaches would op
pose unlimited substitutions, four
would swing the balance. There
has been no indication of how the
directors or faculty men would
vote.
As for money, the Associated
Press learned the conference had
looked into reports that Washing
ton State college and University
of Idaho athletics had been aided
by funds from clubs supported in
part by slot machine income.
j SULKY DRIVER SIDELINED
1 NEW YORK UP) Eddie
Cobb, holder of i pair of world's
records and winner of the $50,
000 Golden West Pace in 1949 and
1950, has been sidelined with a
broken arm. Cobb, an Ohio horse
man, auffered the injury in a train
ing accident. His 1951 debut will
be delayed until he is able to get
back into the sulky.
Matchmaker Elton Owen has i
been unable to com to reasonable
terms for a coast junior heavy
weight championship wrestling
match with Maurce LaChappelle,
and the pending title tilt here is
still in the making.
In the meantime LaChappelle
has agreed to appear in a six-man
"battle royal" here Saturday nigut
at the Roseburg armory arena, and
the outstanding1 title contender will
be the top favorite in a brilliant
field of tup-tlight matmen.
Others booked for the free-for-all
are Sugy Hayamaki, the Japanese
jiu-jitsu expert; Ace Abbott, the
"bad boy of New Mexico";
F r e n c h i e Roy, the sensational
French - Canadian newcomer;
Danno McDonald, the young
Scotch Canadian, and Cowboy
Carlson, the ex-rodeo performer
from Wyoming.
$200 Purse Put Up
Owen addnounced that he would
put up a $200 purse for the win
ner, with added cash awards tor
two other winners. All six men re
turn for action following the hectic
elimination skirmish. The first
! two and the third and fourth men
j eliminated will return for one-fall
20-minute matches. The two final
ists will battle for the handsome
I purse over a three-fall, half-hour
route.
Saturday's match is considered
I one of the most promising ever
staged here, not in numbers but in
high-class personnel. Any of the,
six matmen is capable of walking
off wilh the lucrative purse and
both Hayamaki and Abbott have I
not appeared here for some time.
