Bi'ar frame is on the increase in forested areas of
western Oregon and Washington where tree farm
have been established.
Tree farms are providing the people of this rerion
with twin crops timber and game, according to W. D.
Hagenstein, industry forester. Deer, elk and bear seem to
thrive in young growing forests where there is plenty of
grass and feed growing in between the young timber.
There is not much game on old growth forests because
mere is no Teed.
The first big game harvest data
for the over three million acres of
west coast tree farms lying west
of the Cascades in Oregon and
Washington has just been gathered
for 1949. During 1949, some 53,705
hunters harvested 4.565 deer, 1,109
elk and 132 bear from these far
flung tree farms.
While the first objective of tree
farm ownership is to grow tim
ber for this region's principal in
dustry, the mere fact that timber
is growing means also that game
will be found there in the young
timber. As timber harvesting pro
gresses on tree farms there is a
noticeable increase in deer and
game population because more of
the land area is In young growing
trees and relieved of tne burdcii
of carrying the old, ripe old growth.

A well-balanced tree farm will
have equal portions of timber of
every ase from seedlings to ma
ture timber, points out W. D. Ha
genstein, industry forester. As
each block of timber becomes ripe
it is hsrvested snd the lsnd soon
is growing a new crop of trees.
A crop of pulp wood can be growl
in from 25 to 40 years, but it takes
from 75 to 100 yesrs to grow trees
large enough for sawlogs.
Hagenstein ssid land owner
were generally glad to allow the
general publie the privilege of
hunting on tree farms, but at times,
because of dangerous fire weather,
hunters must be kept out.
most Burners on tree farms oo-
' serve rules of safety with fire and
I are careful with the property ol
