For College Teachers

subsidiary of the Ford foundation
is creating a $2,280,000 fellowship
program for young college teach
ers. Clarence H. Faust, president of
the foundation's fund for the ad
vancement of education, says the
program is designed to increase
the teaching skill of young in
structors and reduce the shock of
military mobilization on college
and university faculties.
It will be directed by s com
mittee of 16 college and unversity
presidents and deans, with Presi
dent Victor Butterfield of Wesleyan
as chairman.

Raid Nets Batch
Of Slot Machines

slot machines wer seized in Uma
tilla county Thursday night on
ordera from the state police head
quarters in Salem.
District Attorney George H.
Corey would only say today that
"the raids were made in conform
ity with the law." He did not say
who ordered the raids.
Also seized were a number of
punchboards and two mechanical
games of chance.
The raids were conducted jointly
by state police, the county sheriff's
department and Pendleton and
ilermiston city police.
Biggest haul was at the "I.itlle
Reno." a little night spot near
Ilermiston, in the west end of the
county. Stale police found nine
slot machinea and two games
of chance.
Aubra Britlon Davis was cited
lo appear in Pendleton justice
court May 2 to answer charges
of possessing slot machines and
games of chance. Sam I.uther Ray
of Ilermiston was cited as alleged
owner of the machines.
State police and the sheriff's
department reported that they
seized slot machines at the Jesse
.lames club at Stanfield and four
slot machines and a punchboard
at the Vets club at lirrmisi.m
Owners of these clubs were also
cited to appear in justice court.
In visits to places in Pendleton,
officers found no slot machines.

Thursday, May 3, marks the
third anniversary of the Winston
Community club. All members are
asked to attend the birthday meet
ing to be held at the clubhouse
at 7:30 p.m. Officers for the com
ing year will be elected. Refresh
ments are promised at the close
of the meeting.
Mrs. Tom Parkinson, who, with
her husband, has been attending
the current session of the 1951
legislature in Salem, was driven
to Roseburg on Thursday evening,
hy her hrther. Ed Sala. of Portland.
She remained here until Saturday
evening before returning to Sa
lem. Mrs. John Killip, daughter of
Senator and Mrs. Parkinson, ac
companied Mr. Sala bark as far
as Salem where she served as
secretary to her father on Friday
and Saturday. Tlie Parkinsons
hope to be able to return to their
ranch in Winston within the next
two weeks.
The Rev. Kenneth Knox will con- j
duct a series of evangelistic meet-1
ings over a two-weeks' period, be-1
ginning on Tuesday evening, May
1, and continuing each evening, !
through May 13, at the Winston
Community Christian church. The
general public has been invited
to attend.
L. J. Fullerlon of the Fullerton
Beverage company in Winston, is
in Idaho on business this week.

Winston Community Christian
church building, located behind
Howard's hardware store, on Sun
day, April 29. Services will begin
at 2:30 p.m. and will be conducted

A big improvement was made
at the Tenmile cemetery Sunday,
but there is still a lot to be Hone.
Another cleanup day, which is
being sponsored by the Olalla Busy
Steppers club and the Tenmile
Ladies club, is planned for Sunday
May 6. Everyone interested in the
cemetery are urged to help. The
ladies are to bring a covered dish
for a potluck dinner, which will
