Wcfrfcf s Expense For Flying
Exceeds. $256 Billion Total
By JAMES J. STREP.IG
Associated Press Aviation Reporter
WASHINGTON A British scientist has figured that
from Dec. 17, 1903, the dav the Wright brothers flew, up
to 1940, the world spent $256,000,000,000 on aviation.
Thnt is almost exactly the federal debt today and
nearly four fifths of the military costs of World War II
to the I'nited States.
The estimate was made by Sir
Richard Kairey, founder in 1915
of the British airplane company
of that name and holder of most
of the aeronautical honors attain
able in England. He served with
various British commissions in
Washington during the war.
Russia Is Only Guess
Sir Richard achieved his total
with a painstaking year by year
study of governament reports and
translation of national currencies
into aouar equivalents at ine time
of the spending. The largest pos
sible element of error, he said,
lies in the estimates of Russian
military aviation spending.
The study was made for the 38th
Wilbur Wright Memorial Lecture
before the Royal Aeronautical
Society in London last spring.
Sir Richard computed world
spending for military aviation at
JL'45,000,000,000. That, of course,
docs not include the money be
ing spent for building air power
since fighting began in Korea. Of
the military total, $188,000,000,000,
or 76 percent, was spent during
World War II.
Civil Flying's Share
Global spending for civil avia
tion, including the Berlin airlift,
was figured-at $11,500,000,000 for
the 48 years. This is only about
one dollar in 25 of the grand total.
Sir Richard noted, in tracing
the spending for civil aviation, that
before the first world war it in
cluded only sports flying and
public entertainment or exhibi
tions. Air transportation had its
beginnings soon after World War
I and grew slowly in the 20 years
before the next conflict.
By 1939 the world was spending
around $390,000,000 a year on civil
aviation. But in the last year of
the study the fiscal year ending in
1949 the total was $2,250,000,000.
The yearly rate was equal to

Letters Show Gossiping
By Mary Todd Lincoln
NEW YORK - P) - Six letters
written by Mary Todd Lincoln to
New York friend have turned up
at the national antique show here.
About all they prove is that Mrs.
Abraham Lincoln, like most people
enjoyed discussing a bit of gossip.
The letters are owned by Mrs.
Verncr Alcxanderson of Englo
wood, N. J., and were written to
her great-grandfather, Abram
Wakeman Sr.
Wakeman was New York
lawyer and the city's postmaster
in 1860. He supported Lincoln's
eaiH)ai'n for the presidency.
In one letter, Mrs. Lincoln re
fers to a "W," later designated as
"so very far beneath our thoughts,"
but adds:
"Yet when you chance to visit
'W H(ill be' quite amusine to
hear your account (sic) some of the
ludicrous scenes you may have
passed through."
