Defense Secretary Marshall savs
scrimping to find enough boOe
replacements to send to Korea was
"a fly-by-night procedure in which
we should never be involved."
Marshall deviated from a pre
pared speech to make the remark
after citing the difficulty encoun
tered in "finding 12,000 men to be
sent to Korea" to take the place
of casualties.
Washington and at the state and
county levels will have a hand in
drafting these programs.
Nevertheless, the state a n d I

tors, the former wartime army
general called recent Allied victo-
ries in Korea "a stunning blow
to communist prestige.
He urged the educators to sup
port the plan to draft 18-year-olds
to bolster our armed forces whose
weakness "encouraged Communist
aggression in Korea."
"If we had had immediately
available a trained reserve that
could have been quickly brought
into action, that Korea attack
would never have been made. But,
if made, it would have been sup
pressed, I think, long before this,"
Marshall said.
He commented on the fact that
the nation was caught unprepared
before both World wars and again
before the present Korean conflict.

TAKE MIDDLEMAN OFF (MEAT) HOOK The average of all
meat prices went up 3.1 cents in 1950. and the farmer not the
much-maligned middleman and retailer got the whole increase,
as Newschart above illustrates. This startling fact is underlined
in a Bureau of Agricultural Economics report prepared by Harold
Beimeyer, agricultural economist. He says the estimates are rough,
Hot precisely accurate, but adds he'll stand by the general story
that the furmers got the gravy.

Unemployment
Pay Plans Please

SALEM UP) The legisla
ture's controversial and difficult
unemployment compensation pro
gram has taken shape with nei
ther employers or labor happy
about it.
The senate labor and industries
committee unanimously approved
unemployment legislation which
makes concessions to both sides.
It would keep the present scale
of maximum benefits of $25 a week
for 26 weeks in any year, but
would add a 'provision that jobless
persons could get $2.50 a week for
each dependent up to four depend
ents. Employer contributions would
be reduced $1,300,000 a year, or
about 10 percent.
The ceiling on the maximum
benefits in a year would be in
crease from V of the earnings in
a year to 1-3.
And the seasonality clause of the
law would be repealed, with a new
formula substituted.
Labor wanted the benefits I n
creased to a top of 30 a week,
and is unhappy about the new ben
efit schedule. So are the employ
ers. 1
Neither labor nor employers op
tributions. Labor likes the in
pose the decreased employer con
crease in the maximum benefits
from Yt to 1-3, but the employers
don't.

Flu Epidemic Nearing
Its Peak In Ontario
TORONTO - UP) A nation

One in eight workers and stu

Montreal Canada's largest city

HOUSTON, Tex. -.PV-General
Owight D. Eisenhower "positively

The senator said the general's

But, continued the senator, "if
the Republicans want to win the
