Belgians Gypped
In White Mice
Breeding Racket
RHHSSKI.S. Bplcium (.V)
! Some prolific while mice that
were supposed to multiply into a
small fortune have bred a lot of
i trouble and unwanted offspring
around Belgium.
i They were bought at S2 a pair
by thousands of Belgian in re-
' sponse to advertisements wr.ich
offered to buy back the resulting
droves of young while mice at 48
cents a head.
The advertisers said the young
' white mice were needed in labor
atory experiments and promised
that the mating couples, sold in
mini nui in uioups of five pairs,
would produce plenty of proi'its.
They produced thousands upon
tbousands of white mice hut no
profits, (.'rates of white mice came
hy the carload to the unsuspecting
i railroad slationmaster at Charle
ioi the address listed by the ad
vertisers. When they remained uncollected
after several days, the distraught
stationmaster refused to accept
further shipments. He had h i s
thousands of mice destroyed. The
Ihousands more that kept arnv-
. ing were shipped bark to the
senders.
Frantic Belgians, some witn as
many as 5m white mice in their
homes and many more coming
regularly, called in police. But liic
authorities said there was no legal
hasis for any action against any
bodyexcept perhaps those would
be breeders who tried to whvIi
Iheir hands of the whole tiling by
j turniing loose their white mice into
the streets.
