Chaplains Face
Handicaps To Aid
Korean Orphans
U.S. FIFTH AIR FORCE HEAD
QUARTERS, Korea UP) Chip,
lains of the U.S. Fifth air force
who are operating a huge proj
ect for Korean orphans as aa
extra duty are fishting hard to
l.cep the wolf wny from the or
phanage door.
The orphans 885 of them on
the South Korean island of Cheju
use up an incredible amount of
Korean won every day. The t:tal
is more than 15,000 won daily for
food and fuel alone.
Won is not one of the world's
most valued currencies. One dol
lar (U.S.) will get you 4.000 of
them at the legal rate. But even
so, the orphans cost the chaplains
at least $40 a day. Us not only
a heavy drain on the chaplain's
cash, but it provides only tor the
barest necessities.
Double the sum would not be
loo much for the island project,
..nd, of course, there unfortunately
is no limit tn the number ot pitiful
wandering children to be taken in
aru saved from war's misory or
death.
"So far we have spent $8,000
and we can use every cent that
comes our way," said Col. Russell
I.. Blaisdcll, the Fifth's chief of
chaplains and mainspring of the
trphan project. "In addition, we
have used up very large amounts
of supplies that were given to us
ir. kind, such as clothing, food ana
wpod to burn. But we lost lot
of these gifts when we had to
evacuate Seoul and left much of
it in the buildings we had there."
Blaisdcll said the chaplains took
rvcr the project at a time when
r.eithcr the South Korean gov.srn-r.-ent,
civilian agencies, nor the
Krrean army were able to help
the abandoned children. The plan
row, however, is to turn it back
lo the South Korean government.
In the meantime, the chaplains
ntc scratching for means to keep
the little waifs supplied with at
least the human minimum nf njur
ishmcnl, warmth, and sheltei.
Bonus For Combat GIs I
In Korea Requested j
WASHINGTON VP) The De-
fense department has asked Con
gress to grant combat bonus pay
of to $100 monthly to troops
fighting in Korea.
Legislation submitted by the de
partment provides the additional
$:0 monthly for enlisted men and
the SJOO extra for officers if they
hav&ought the enemy at least six
days in any month.
It would be retroactive to June
27, the date American forces
started fighting in Kerea, and
would apply both to troops engaged i
in direct battle with the enemy j
and to other men who serve i n
immediate support of combat
forces.
