Murder Conviction
Of Wife To Be Appealed

for Mrs. Sigurd Hansen, 50, in
dicated they would appeal her con
viction on a first-dejree murder
charge.
. The first woman ever convicted
of murder in Benton county, she
was found guilty last week ot
crushing her husband to death with
the family automobile Sept. 10.
The jury that convicted her rec
ommended leniency, ruling out a
death sentence, but making life
imprisonment a mandatory sen

New County Judge Quits
After Three-Week Tenure
SALEM (m County Judge
Ray platt, who was appointed only
three weeks ago, has resigned
after serving only three weeks,
Governor McKay said.
. Glatt suffered a heart attack in
Los Angeles, and said he has been
ordered to rest for six months.
He was appointed by the gov
ernor to succeed the late Judge
Grant Murphy.

Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Moody and
family have returned from a visit
to North Dakota. Mr. Moody re
ported that all roads out of that
part of the state except one were
snow blocked when they left. Tem
peratures had been down to 30 de
jrees below.
Frank Milton, Joe Caposa and
Spencer Gaston, who are stationed
with the coast guard cutter, Bon
ham, at Coos Bay, visited the
Howard Milton family Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. T. G. Lawsort of
Tigard spent several days in the
valley visiting at the home ot Mr.
and Mrs. Donald Lawson.
Mr. and Mrs. Howard Brown of
Bandon have been visiting at the
home of Mr. Brown's parents, Mr.
and Mrs. Frank Brown.
Miss Kllen Osborn of Portland is
staying at the home of her sister,
Mrs. Wesley Durland. during the
absence of Rev. Mr. Durland who
is in Portland undergoing a skin
graft on his foot.
James Jones moved his family
into the Sallee house on Camas
mountain.

dent; and Daisy Kirkcndall was
re-elected as secretary-treasurer.
Plans were made to hold a
cooked food sale In Roseburg as
soon as a place can be obtained.
Thev are also setting a sander
which Hoyden Taylor will use to
sand the floor of the social room
Mnday night. The wmen will
varnish the floor Tuesday.
The Home Economics club met
at the home of Lou Cunningham. 11
was voted that the club meet in
different homes and that refresh
ments be served. The year books
are reported to be ready for the
next meeting. The club plans to
stage a minstrel show in February
with Mrs. Margaret Crouch in
charge. Present were, Dorothy
Papst, Lou Cunningham, Mrs. L.
A. Pryor, Mrs. II. S. Taylor, Mrs.
M. A. Jenes, and Mrs. Guy Moore.

Plans Food Sale For Azalea House

A cooked food sale, under the
auspices of the Winston- Dillard
Home Extension club, will be held
at Howard's hardware store in
Winston Thursday, Jan. 18. Pro
ceeds will be used to help defray
expenses on the Azalea house proj
ect. The Azalea house, which is
being constructed on the OSC cam
pus in Corvallis, is dependent upon
funds from the various Home Ex
tension units for its completion.
All members of the Winston-Dillard
Home Extension club are in
vited to attend the all-day meeting
to be held at the home of Mrs.

Wednesday, Jan. 17. Topic for dis.
cussinn will be "Home Furnishing
and Furniture Arrangement," and
a politick luncheon will be served
at the noon hour.
The windstorm which roarded
through Winston on Wednesday
night is reported to have done little
damage. The high winds eased off
in the early morning hours, bring
ing rain to the valleys and snow
to the higher elevations. Snow
capped mountains surrounded the
area on Thursday morning, some
of which did not melt off during
the daylight hours.
Les Barnes of Winston has ac
cepted employment with the Cali
fornia Oregon Power company at
the Tokelec Falls project on the
North Untpqua.
Word has been received here
that Mr. and Mrs. Walter Ander
son will remain ir Portland for an
indefinite period. A sudden death
in their family on the eve of their
filanned departure for their home
n Winston, has delayed them in
that city.
Recent house guests in the home
of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Harri
son were Mr. and Mrs. Howard
Hooker and three children of Med-ford.

Following a visit in Los Angeles
and vicinity, Mr. and Mrs. Al Dot
son have returned to their home
in this community. Accompanying
them south was the former's
father, R. W. Dotson, who had been
visiting here for several weeks
from Lincoln, Neb. Mr. Dotson
boarded the train in Los Angelei
for his home in the midwest.
Members of the Winston Com
munity club, who have not returned
their cards for reservations at the
family dinner to be held at the
community hall on the evening of
Jan. 26, are asked to do so at
once in order that plans can be
completed by Jan. 18, at which
time food for the affair will be
ordered.
