Harriet Ma 'ion Alexander, 02,
resident of Roseburg for many
years, died Friday, Dec. 20, after
a lingering illness.
She was born Feb. 5, 18B8. in
St. Paul, Minn, and lived tor a
number of years in Louisville, Ky,
She marie her home in Looking
glass with her uncle, the la le
Oeorge Best, before moving t o
Roseburg five years ago. She was
preceded in death by her husband,
Guard, and a daughter. Dr. Mar
ion J. Alexander. She was a mem
ber of the Catholic church.
Surviving are a son, Gerard
(Jerry) Alexander, Roseburg, and
a step-grandson, John L. Stafford,
Roseburg.
Recitation of the Rosary will be

Council Legalizes
Civilian Defense
he Canyonville city council has
adopted i resolution legalizing the
civilian defense program in that
city and naming C, E. Parker to
take charge of the organization.
The council's action establishes
Parker's authority in all cases of
emoravney.
Brig. Gen. J. T. Pierce, ret.,
head of the county civilian defense
program, recently addressed a pub.

school. He explained the setup of
liis office, which includes an office
secretary at Roseburg, and depart
ment heads for administration,
welfare assistance and medical aid.
Representatives n each district
will work through these leaders and
appoint as many assistants as each
community organization needs, he
said. .
The general stressed two points:
first, knowledge for "your own pro
tection," and readiness to care for
a large influx of evacuees from
metropolitan areas. Many of these
may be wounded or sick. Second,
there will not be a budget or any
allotment from outside sources.
Funds needed lor the program will
be the responsibility of each com
munity. A check has already been made.

gram. Portland Bakeries Up
Bread Price One Cent
PORTLAND (.VI The price
of bread will be boosted one cent a
loaf today by some maior Port
land bakeries. an industrial
spokesman said Friday.
Other bakeries are expected to
follow suit early next week.
The increase is in line with
boosts in most other Pacific coast
cities, the spokesman said.
Bread would retail at 24 cents
for a l'-j pound loaf and 17 cents
for a 1 pound loaf under the new
price schedule.
Material costs have gone up 22
percent since July, one bakery
manager said.

The Volga-Don canal extends
from Stalingrad on the Volga to
Kalach on the don. By linking the
four eras, it will increase Soviet
strength in several ways, ,
1. By enabling vessels to navi
gate between the Black sea and
any of the other three seas in Eu
ropean Russ3, it will greatly In
crease the maneuverability of Rus
sia fleet.
2. It will enhance Russia's abil
ity to produce wheat, cotton and
livestock by putting into produc
tion fertile but arid areas, and the
sun-beaten lands in the center of
the Soviet bread basket.
3. It will relieve the load on
Societ railroads by enabling coal
from the Donbass basin to move
by water along the Volga valley
and adjacent seas and waterways.
As part of the canal's construc
tion, a large dam across the Don
will siiddIv power for generators
with a capacity of 160,000 kilowatts.
The canal system also involves
a large-scale irrigation project,
which will irrigate 1.875.OO0 acres
of land and improve 5,000,000 other
acres.
Previously the government an
nounced projects for the world's
largest hydroelectric station near
Kuibyshev, for another of almost
equal size near Stalingrad and for
a long canal from the Amu Darya
river in Central Asia to the Cas
pian sea.

he personally turned over $1,500 to

The sum came in two payments
from Jimmy Velasco, gambling
syndicate lieutenant slain Dec. 12,
1948, Gislia said. The first pay
ment of S500, said Giglia, was made
as a campaign contribution after
Culbreath had warned Velasco to
"get right" and not support his
opponent. f
The remaining $1,000 was des-j

Marine Recruiting Unit
Will Open In Roseburg
