Schmidt was a co-defendant with
Harry Bridges, president of the
left-wing union, in the trial which
resulted in Bridges' conviction of
perjury. He was sentenced to five
years in prison and has appealed.
Schmidt was sentenced two years
for conspiracy.

Here are further facts on the loss
of stock belonging to Leslie Crane,

day. Further repairs have been made

mill. New underpinnings and
planks were built in a portion of it.
Mrs. Ruby Meacham entertained
Thursday with a stork shower in
honor of Mrs. Wanda Crane. Re
freshments were served to the
group after the honored guest had
opened several gifts. Present were
the Mesdames Helen Suiter, Lizzie
Gilman, Dorothy Uleson, Grace
Coins, Pearl Hill, Ada Redifer,
Grace Thompson and Ruby Mea
cham. Several who were unable to
be present sent their gifts.
The Pass Creek unit of the Doug
las county Home Extension service
met Tuesday, Dec. 12, at the Redi
fer home with Mrs. Pearl Hill and
Mrs. Ada Redifer as joint host
esses. A demonstration was pre
sented on "Oregon Sweets." After
a dinner of chili, hot rolls, and
dessert, Ihe afternoon was spent
in trying out the various recipes.

ess at the meeting planned for Jan.

Death Sentence Reversal Followed By Repeat Deed
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (P) -A
22-year-old soldier, who.ie death
sentence for the rape slaying of an
Anchorage woman was reversed
only two weeks ago, was sentenced
Tuesday to 15 years in the federal
penitentiary on a charge of as
saulting a second woman with in
tent to commit rape.
The soldier, Harvey L. Carignan,
was sentenced to McNeil island
prison for the attempted rape of
Mrs. Christine Norton of Anchor
age in July, 1949.
It was after his arrest in con
nection with the attack on Mrs.
Norton that Carignan confessed to
the slaying of Mrs. Laura Sho
waiter. A death sentenre followed his
conviction of the murder and rape
charges, but was reversed by the
U. S. Ninth circuit court of appeals
two weeks ago. The court held that
stitches were required to close the
wound.
Leslie Coins was rushed to a
Cottage Grove doctor Monday
evening with a cut finger requir
ing several stitches.
Delbert Oatney succumbed to in
juries received in a woods accident
Monday. He was found unconscious
and taken to a Eugene hospital
where he died later in the day.
No definite facts have been re
leased as yet. He is survived by
his wife and two children Lavina
and Larry.

declared Wednesday she has made
her last motion picture, she lias

nodded. She and the Los Angclea
