Claus in the person of railroaders
on the Santa Fe Ios Angeles divi
sion comes to their ailing pal, 18-year-old
Jill Miller, on Thursday.
Ever since Jill and her mother,
Mrs. Freda B. Miller, moved into
their house near the tracks in 1947,
Jill from the front porch had waved
and smiled at the engineers and
trainmen on the passing trains.
Track supervisors and signal main
tamers, zipping along on little mo
tor cars, also got greetings. In
turn, they dropped off magazines
and newspapers for her.
But a year ago they missed Jill.
Then a sign appeared in her win
dow: .sick. 1 lie railroaders in
quired, found she had been stricken
with rheumatic fever a.nn pre
sented her with a few Christmas
trinkets last year.
Now she is a cardiac Invalid,
abed indefinitely. Yet daily Jill
flutters a little yellow flag in her
window, signals at night with a
flashlight, in place of her personal
waves.

Christmas party. They'll present

railroaders' wives, and a huge mir
ror for her wall so she can watch
the reflection of the passing
streamliners, the locaJs and the
freight trains.
Engineer 0. D. Kelley of San
Bernardino, Calif., with whom Jill
corresponded, will head the Santa
Claus delegation. Jill's doctor says
her railroad friendship has given
her a definite mental lift in her
struggle for health.

At the recent meeting of the
city council, C. I.. Licklider was
granted a franchise to run phone
lines in the, city. F.lection for the
adoption of a charter for the city
of Elkton will be held Jan. 2.
Santa Clause is scheduled to put
in an appearance Tuesday night.
There will be a free show, "Great
Feeling", at the Elkton theatre
that night, after treats are dis
tributed to the kiddies at the
Christmas tree in town. ;
The Elkton high school students
have invited the teachers' wives
and husbands and board members
and their wives to their annual
Christmas dinner to be held Fri
day noon,
The Church of Christ will have
a Christmas program at the church
Wednesday evening. The Metho
dist church will stage a Christ
mas program during the regular
Sunday school hour Sunday morn
ing. The Willing workers of the
Church of Christ held a program
and gift exchange at the church
Wednesday afternoon. The Elkton
grade school will present a Christ
mas program Thursday, Dec. 21,
at 8 p.m. at the school. The schools
will close for Christinas vacation
Fridjy afternoon and will reopen
Tuesday, Jan. 2.
Mr. and Mrs. Vird Moser of
Enumclaw, Wash., are stopping lor
a visit with Air. and Mrs. Walter
Esslinger for a few days. They are
enroute to lxis Angeles where they
will spend Christmas.
Mr. and Mrs. Walter Esslinger
and daughter, Virginia, will leave
Dec. 23, for Spokane, Wash., where
they will attend the Christian Es
slinger family reunion. While in
Washington they will be the guests
of Mr. and Mrs. Ted Esslinger.
Mr. and Mrs. E. H. Weigle and
three children of Beaverton and
Mr. and Mrs. L. H. Weigle of
Harbor, Ore., will arrive this week-!
end to be guests of Mr. and Mrs. 1
Wade Henlierer over the holidays.
They will stay for a week.
Mrs. Gerald Riley left for Wash
ington D. C. Wednesday to be with
her husband. She plans to be gone
