De Pour Chorus
To Appear Here
On Friday Night
The first important concert at
traction to spring from World War
II, de Paur'a Infantry chorus, will t
be heard here on Friday, Dec. 8.)
at 8 p. m. in the junior high school ,
auditorium under the auspices of
the Roseburg Community I'oncert
association. The tuneful veterans,
who sang for American troops from
Iwo Jima to Bad Nauheim, re
mained together as a unit under
C'apt. Leonard de Paur'a direction1
and are now making their third
civilian concert tour of more than 1
160 concerts under the auspices of
F. C. Coppicus and F. C. Schan. 1
of Columbia Artists management
The de Paur Chorus, organized '
within the 372nd Infantry regiment 1
at Fort Dix, N. J., in 1942, gave
more than 2000 concerts for Amer-1
it-an armed forces while in the!
service, visiting every theatre of!
war during the course of their 1
three year travels. No island was i
too small, no outpost too remote I
for the singing infantry men. Some-,
times they gave six performances
a day in hospital wards, on the j
decks of battleships, at hidden j
bomber bases, at drab supply sta-,
tions other groups had passed by. j
To the men of the armed forces i
this chorus of singing soldiers was!
a memorable attraction and it was
their enthusiasm that inspired the
singers' decision to stay together
as a concert unit after the war.
Part of the repertoire to be heard
here is made up of music of the
many lands the ex-soldiers vis
ited. Service men who heard them
during the war told the singers
they would like the folks hack home
to hear the programs, which also
include service songs of World War
II as well as contemporary clas
sics, spirituals and songs of differ
ent faiths.
